Over the years, the hole keeps getting deeper and deeper under my feeder. I had to drag one out of the muck last night so I've been thinking about what material to fill the hole with.
1. It's in a friends pasture, so I can't fill it with concrete.
2. I need to fill it with something that grass will grow back in one day.
3. I don't want to move the feeder because I have a nice pen built around it to keep the cows out.
I think the optimal material would be caliche. We use this on our ranch in West Texas for road base and it gets hard. Problem is, I've called a dozen aggregate places and nobody carries caliche here anymore. They have all switched over to crushed concrete for road base.
Another idea is decomposed granite or some type of heavy sand. I only need about 2 yards so cost is not a big issue. ANY IDEAS??

Home Depot sells bags of play sand, it is screened and cleaned so it should grow grass(or corn)very quickly. The water will just wick through it until something grows on it.

I haven't found anything yet outside large field stones that won't get dug right back out again.

Why not just move the feeder over a few feet.

Might try a bunch of Polymeric Sand used for paver stone.

I would go with the decomposed granite. Get the hole dried out as best as possible and then use a hand tamp to compact the granite. I will get very firm and hard. Water will drain through it and it won't get muddy. Eventually, grass will grow over it when it stops getting traffic. I'm getting ready to put it in the bottom of our horse' stall.

Think I'm going to use decomposed granite or "select fill" (sand with non expanding clay) then stake a piece of cattle panel over it with rebar. That should make it nice and level and keep the pigs from digging it up again.
Thanks for all the ideas!

Decomposed granite or 1" crushed limestone, or referred to as septic rock....any soil/clay based product will become soup with next rain....

If you can move the feeder and put some cattle panels down underneath it. If you don't move it fill the hole with sand or road base then put the panels down.

I would be concerned about the corn getting down in between the 1" crushed rock and giving them a reason to continue to root the rocks around. With the granite, you get a solid surface that the corn can't fall down into.
