My friend ET just called excited. They had found 15 coveys this morning and pointed most. He said that Beckett busted one covey. The wind was strong out of the north. This is Beckett;

He went on to say that Beckett came in from the north and never smelled them. I corrected him with some NSTRA guidelines. I told him that Beckett had bumped the birds. My first pointer was before the e-collar. She'd point them and take them out. Busting to me is smelling them and never pointing them. I've seen it all. Bumped is the only one that's forgivable to me. What are your definitions? I've had them all. Have you?

I agree a bump takes place when the dogs never smells them. I believe it also occurs when dog come in on unwind side whirls, points and birds flush.

What do you call when a dog is working running birds and has worked them for over 50 yards, pointing, relocating, pointing etc and birds get up 20 yards in front of dogs. I had that happen several time last weekend in a real high wind. If the dogs and not been continuing to relocate we would have never seen them fly.

I use to have a pointer that was extremely difficult to break but in latter years she would bust birds on command. Worked out nice when birds in gulley or thicket and you could stay where you could shoot and she would flush them.

When I get so good that I never miss I will expect a dog that never makes a mistake. Since I am on the wrong side of the curve I will never have it happen.

I love to watch a pup become a birddog and good dogs work running birds.

If it isn't white it is not a birddog.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.

On some Quail Coalition managed property on the coastal prairies. Jim Willis was there.

To me, bumped is when the dog gets a little close before they lock up on point and the birds flush. On the other hand if the dog locks up a good 10 yards or more from the covey and stays locked but the birds flush well after the point and while the dog is holding that to me is flushing wild...the birds just didn't hold...happens with pressured birds and in the afternoon when birds are loafing. If the dog completely misses the point and the birds flush because I'm about to step on them that is a miss...as in the dog completely missed the birds. If the dog barrels through a covey and they flush that is busted...that's what flushing dogs are for.
