What are you guys planting in the spring? We have gotten a couple of deer on camera behind our house in Collin county, I know I could just throw corn but I want to plant something just for fun more than anything and see what shows up. I will be able to haul water down to it if need be, if that makes any difference.

Also looking for suggestions for west central texas, concho county

Good question, anyone used "Throw and Grow" with any success?

Used it this year on a plowed/till'd foodpatch, with the decent rains, it greened up pretty well and had plenty of tracks in it..

I hand seeded an area that the Electric co op had cleared with that throw and grow stuff late summer. Although I think I was a little late in getting it growing well. Think it was radishes,rye and something else.

We've tried a few things with varying degrees of success. Alfalfa, soybeans, clover all worked decently well, and then we did some milo and native sunflowers. The deer will eat the milo when they get used to it, but the dove just love it. Best thing I would do is plant rows of different seed and see what works the best.

As far as carrying the water down, I wouldn't bother, unless you have a tank truck or trailer. 1 inch over 1 acre is 27k gallons, so unless you have a tanker trailer, it's hardly worth the effort. We have a tank a few hundred yards from our plot, so we got a gas powered trash pump and some surplus fire hose to water in the initial planting. After that, we'll only do it if it really needs it.

Buckwheat, clover & cowpeas. Buckwheat can be mowed fairly often if there's enough rain and it'll reseed. Then let it mature before the Fall plots go in, mow it, burn it, disc it in.

They also have a good summer plot seed pre-mixed and ready to go. Have great info on planting as well.

I have always been a 100% soybean spring plot man (seeds from last years harvest to boot). This I am testing three different brands (Evolve Harvest, Biologic and Cabelas). Some are 100% lablab, while others mix in some lablab, soybeans, milo, peas and sunflowers. We used he latter on our Missouri farm and it did awesome. The Winter Peas also did great up there. Not sure how these two will work deeper south...but, only one way to find out.

Never had much success with Spring plots. With the weather getting warmer, the weeds and grasses eventually take over. Fall plots seem to work best as the cooler weather keeps back everything but what you plant after a hard kill with a good spraying.
