I started duck hunting for the first time after the split. I would either go hunting with friends at their place or hunt on my family's land by myself. I never had to use a duck call, so I never bought one. I did however just join ducks unlimited. With my membership comes the DU Call of the Wild acrylic call. Is this a decent duck call to learn with? I want to go out and practice calling throughout the closed season so I can be ready next season.

Check out the RNT YouTube videos.
I think the Echo diamond wood timber is the best call for the money.
Practice a lot and try not to get frustrated.
Duck calling has been the hardest type of calling I've tried to learn. You can practice from now till November and may still not be very good.
Or you may pick up on it quick.
Good luck!

RNT also has some instructional DVDs that are supposed to be excellent. My son practices in his truck to and from school.

Good luck! Thanks for the tip. I have zero clue about the different calls or how to properly call. I'll keep reading and practicing. I am also a Hank Shaw fan. Enjoyed the quote in your signature.

I just bought my first call this year. I have read on several forums to make sure you start on a double reed call. I bought a Haydel's DR-85 kit which came with a whistle and DVD. Pretty good deal for 30 bucks and on the shotgun world forum this call was consistently mentioned for it's ease of use. I hunted with a guide this year that does not like Duck Commander stuff but he said the DC Triple Threat is the easiest call to learn on and easy to use.

The more reeds in your call the easier they are to use correct?

A double reed like the echo I mentioned is easier to learn on. They take less air in my experience and are easier to make sound raspy.
After you get comfortable with that I'd get a good single reed. Wal1809 on this forum makes a nice single reed call. It takes more air but once you've figured out what "using your diaphragm" means you'll like how a good single reed sounds.

My advice on calling waterfowl.... it's more important knowing when to not call, than it is knowing when to call.
I enjoy seeing a group of ducks turn into my call, and I enjoy seeing a huge flock of geese turn a half mile away and come straight into my call, and I enjoy seeing someone who is good calling birds. But there's nothing that gets under my skin more than incessant calling.
I've been hunting waterfowl for over 40 years. A lot of crap I hear people calling ducks, I have never heard come out of a ducks mouth. Not the sound, not the cadence, not the timbre. It's gotten ridiculous on public.
Not to disparage a good call or a good caller, but it if I didn't know better, I'd bet a lot of calling is done for the entertainment value.

My recommendation would be to practice until you are confident before using your call in a hunting situation. Bad calling does much more harm than good. Once you learn to blow your call, you can then focus on reading the ducks to see how the react when you blow it.
If you have a friend who is legitimately a good caller (not just someone who thinks he is) lean on him for advice and get him to give you some lessons. You need to learn how to read ducks more than how to blow the call, and an experienced hunter can help you with both.
An experienced Waterfowler knows that nothing works every day. Some days aggressive calling will bring them in on a rope, and other days it will flare them. It's all about reading the ducks and determining what they want on that day.
IMO duck hunters being unwilling to change things and adapt during a hunt and through the season saves many a duck's life.

I second the echo diamondwood as an excellent choice for someone new to calling ducks.

Double reed takes more air than a single reed. Learn on a single reed and you will be a better caller.

Best advice I ever got was listen to real ducks and do everything possible to sound just like them. Single quacks and only call when you have to. I still hunt with guys that blow ducks out of a hole.
I'm shedding some decoys, so if you're in need, let me know. I'll let em go for cheap.
