That is the bullet and weight I will use if I ever get to use my 270 WSM on elk. Have watched elk shot with 270 Win with 130gr Partitions and they worked well.
lf the saying "Liar, Liar your pants on fire" were true Mainstream news might be fun to watch

I think that 140 grains is OK for deer, but on the light side. I wouldn't use it for elk. They are too big and strong for it. While you might make a perfect shot and a clean kill, the odds are really high that it will absorb the shot and run off. The problem with small bullets is that an elk can go a very long ways with very little blood to trail.
I use a 30-06 with 165 grain bullets for deer, hogs and anything in the couple hundred pound range. For elk and animals of that size, I use a 338 mag shooting 225 grain bullets. I've killed a dozen elk with that caliber, and hunted with guys shooting smaller calibers. I shot one 6 point bull elk at 500 yards after my friend shot it with a 7 mag. It was a lucky shot on my part, but he was out of ammo and had hit it four times in the chest. It was either take the shot or hope we find it somewhere on the other side of the ridge. The difference in what the bigger bullet did was like night and day.
If you are going to take the time and spend the money to get yourself into good elk country, don't cut corners on the caliber or size of the bullet you are going to use to bring him down.
Eddie

Yes it will be plenty effective... just shoot em where they need to be shot and they will fall. I can't count the number of elk I've seen piled up with a std old 270 shooting 140's.

You cant kill an elk with less than a .416 rigby and a 400 grain bullet. Ha..Its fine if the shots arent crazy long. Weve killed lots of elk with the .270 win with 140 accubond and never had one absorb more than 1 shot, never failed to find one and never had to look far..

Eddie That there was one tough wapiti. It's fine. I prefer larger.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

It's a solid choice. Our go to Elk rifle is a tikka t3 in 270wsm shooting 150 grain ballistic tips, and it's and elk slaying combination. Bigger isn't always better

Elk are a powerful beast but take out the lungs with a 140 gr .270 and it is over.

I have been shooting a regular 270 for 40 years and have taken many nice whitetail and mule deer with it. I always shoot a 140 grain accubond. Last year I droppef a big bull elk with 1 shot at 320 yards. It folded up like a pancake. The 270WSM is even better. Use a good rest and make a good shot, you won't have a problem.

Sums up my view perfectly. Yes, it will work. But, I personally carry more gun. I can shoot my .338WM well (pre-requisite) and sure feel confident when I send 225gr of love a bull's way.
