I've hunted that area. That can be great quail country.

Okay, it is hunt Tuesday. Lets have a report in the next day or two. Had a good hunt with my son late Monday and Tuesday til noon. My 2 dogs pointed a total of 9 covies. We only shot 9 birds, 8 recovered. Were pretty sure the missing bird went down in a hole! Got to propery at 5 on Monday. A pair of hunters were just leaving. They had killed 15 birds, I didn't get their covey count. They also had a 5' rattler they had killed. It was 54 degrees when we got there, I've found snakes in that part of the country as low as 50 degrees. We started hunting at 5:30, I worked dogs, son was the gunner. Put both dogs on the ground. We found 2 covies in an hour, son's shooting was real rusty. Didn't kill any out of those 2 covies. Tuesday we started hunting at 8:30. Temp was mid 40's all morning. Only one dog on the ground at a time, found 7 covies by noon. Last covey we revisited from the Monday hunt. finally started raining at 11:30. Most wild birds I've seen in 4 years. Bill, just saw your post this morning about wanting to go. would have loved to had you and your Gator join us. We stayed on the pasture trails in my diesel truck. Pasture soil is all blow sand and lots of gopher holes(rattlesnake feed). Didn't bring my bronco hunting buggy, had a bad bearing on haul trailer. There was lots of good looking country we didn't cover. I'm sure more birds could be found with more dogs, and an off road vehicle. I would go back, but work is scattering me to Stephenville area for the remainder of the season.

It was 500 for 1 or 2 hunters. 150 for each hunter after that, up to 4 hunters. I stayed at holiday inn express in falfurrias. Only reason I stayed there was I has a free room. If not I would stay at days inn or best western. Can park in front of room door at those 2 places

Glad ya'll found some birds after I've been tooting about what a good crop we have this year. I am not surprised about you thinking a bird went down a hole. Likely it did just that.
I was surprised to hear it said in another thread that particular phenominum is a rarity. I've seen it happen more than I would like. Both with pen-raised, and wild birds. I saw it twice in one day, last time out. I know they went into holes, because both my little English cockers found them. Millie dove in and just had her hind legs kicking in the air, and pulled one out bfore I could stop her, and Max, pulled another from a hole in between tree roots. How in the heck would pen-raised birds know to make for a hole?
Personally, as I've said before, my preference is to leave them in the hole. We've just been lucky so far this year. But it is gonna start warming up pretty quickly now.

Pointer, Both my son and I saw a shot bird fall into a bare mesquite tree, then drop to the ground. It was bare ground under the mesquite, lots of gopher holes. Dog located the other bird shot out of covey rise about 10 yards away. We worked both dogs on the missing bird for about 10 minutes, couldn't find it. All birds harvested had green weeds in their craw.
