As the title says I built my first AR recently. I used a PSA Afghanistan edition lower and PSA lower parts kit. Also added some magpul furniture. The upper was built by Morgan aka Dallasshootingsupplies on the THF using a White Oak Armament barrel, custom made muzzle device, and 10 inch Midwest industries quad rail. I threw a Nikon P223 on top for now but may go in another direction later on. Still got a couple things to do but its ready to shoot. Plan on adding a CMC trigger and a Bravo company Gunfighter charging handle.

To build your own high quality gun, what's it run $ wise in comparison to buying the whole package from a good manufacturer?

I built this for under 900 dollars. Just over 1K with optic. Probably saved a few hundred by building it rather than buying it plus I get the satisfaction of knowing I helped build it.

I've always thought about doing my own but have no clue where to start. Wish there was some place to see the tiers of parts/suppliers, places to buy, instructions, etc.

The Youtubes is where I learned how to build them.

If you can out together a Lego set, you can build a rifle.

I've had many, but the only ones I have kept are the ones I built myself.

Putting together a lower is more "assembly" than "building". First one takes maybe an hour, after that 30 min or less. As others have said, look to youtube for instructions. You can buy a good quality upper for less than $400 from palmetto state armory. All in you'd be around $600, maybe less. Of course you can spend much, much more as well if you are interested.
