I am going to be purchasing a new AR soon, I have had .223/556 but I sold it. I was kind of over that round because I really think it is only good for plinking and small varmints coyotes etc. I have seen that it is not as effective on hogs which is what I want to hunt primarily. I was thinking AR-10 but the rounds are expensive and the rifle itself is pretty heavy. I am considering getting the new Rock River Arms X-1 series in 6.8 SPC. Does anyone out there have experience with this round? Maybe you can let me know the ups and downs to this round.

Thanks

6.8 is awesome on deer and pigs. Hits waaaay harder than .223. You'll love . . . .

6.8 SPC has an entire forum dedicated to it with tons of information
6.5 Grendel is another fine performer with its own forum
Then there are about 40 different wildcat calibers out there for when your ready to reload and expand your AR collection.

6.8 is a good round but I prefer the Grendel. Ammo for it is getting more available with Hornady, Alexander Arms and Wolf all making it these days.

.308 is as cheap, if not cheaper, than 6.8, and much more widely available should you need to stop in a random town and get a box. There are some new AR-10 offerings that are lighter than they've been in the past. For that matter you could also get an AR-10 in .243 or 7mm-08.

6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC are both great choices.. The .308 is too heavy for some, but I use mine a lot.

6.8 will do the job on hogs quite well. Ammo is becoming more common. I think all my LGS carry a selection. However, reloading is where it's at.

One of the downsides of the 6.8 is magazines. Many of the cheaper ones have known reliability. PRI and Barrett are both reliable but expensive.

6.8 with a 95grn Barnes TTSX will definitely do the job on anything you can hunt in Texas.

That's what I was thinking. .308 is cheap, and fmj for plinking is really cheap.

6.8 because of barrel length , weight, ammo ability

I've got an AR15 in 7.62x39 and love it. I've been shooting 153 gr soft points for deer and about 60 yards is the farthest one has run. Ammo is really cheap and you are only looking at a minimal cost upgrade over a 5.56. 20" heavy barrel with floating forearm and getting ready to drop in a 3.5# trigger.

An AR10 would be my choice, but the jump in price for the gun is more than I want to bite off.
