I have never been hunting in Colorado and never applied for a license so excuse my ignorance. I have a place I can go for 4th season that is private land. How do I get a license/tag? Do I have to apply for one? I have no clue and the website is difficult to navigate. Thank you!

If you cant get a Landowner voucher, you can apply for the 4th private land tag. If you look in the regs for each unit, there are dates and codes for general public and different code for PL for the same unit.

Ask the LO about a voucher/PL tag

This. If you plan to hunt CO a bunch, make sure you also put in for preference points, that way when you end up with more tag options in the future.

4th season elk is normally a pretty tough draw, mule deer even more so.

If your land owner gets vouchers make sure he checks unit and not just ranch specific. Most land owner tags are either sex. By doing unit its antlered only but allows you to hunt public if the game isn't there.

I am pretty sure they don't have vouchers. I was wanting to do 4th season elk and deer but have been told it takes 6 PP to get deer. They told me elk would be much easier to get drawn for and last year it took 0 PP for 4th season.

If you are not able to purchase a land owner voucher you will have to go through the general draw/lottery. All of our deer tags are through the draw. Some of our elk tags are available to purchase over the counter but a lot of the good units are through the draw also. The draw is what your friends were referring to when they referenced 6 points for deer and 0 for elk. each year that you are unsuccessful you acquire a preference point. 6 points is a 6 year wait.

Colorado is broken up into GMU's(game management units)and you apply to hunt in one or more of those gmu's, so you would need to know the location of the property to find out which GMU to apply to hunt in. The seasons are also separated by method of hunting, there is archery season, muzzleloader, and usually 4 rifle seasons. Each rifle season is for a specific period of time and they range from 9 days to 4 days in duration. Example: this years 4th rifle season in GMU 51 was Nov.12-16th

You also have to choose the sex of the animal you are hunting, bull or buck, cow or doe, or you can apply for an either sex license. Some GMU's may not offer either sex licenses. Or may not offer the sex of the animal you wish to hunt in all seasons.

There is some good news as some GMU's offer private land tags. These are different than land owner vouchers as they cannot be transferred to anther hunter. Many of the private land tags run the length of the whole big game season which is September 1st-January 31st. On a downside, many of the private land tags are for does and cows only.

It's pretty specific on the animal, dates you'll be hunting and where you are allowed to hunt. We apply for elk, deer, antelope, bear, goat, sheep and moose. Multiply that by 4 and add in work and school calendars and you'll understand why it takes a whole day for me to plan out our application codes

PM if you have any questions

I'd pick 1 species and with deer only running 6pts for a 4th tag and elk 0 there's a good chance you'll be banking on 1000ac to produce a lot.
