A few years ago we had a lease in Coleman County that was pretty incredible - good deer numbers and quality, had some awesome dove hunts, ducks loaded up the ponds in December, wild quail were abundant, and there were turkey everywhere in the spring. The only thing it didn't have was hogs (which is good or bad depending on what you want).

We're looking in Coleman again for next year and further down the line would like to buy some land, too, but wondered what other counties in the Cross Timbers region people have experienced the same variety of wildlife. What do you think is the "best" county for having as many hunting opportunities as possible?

Edwards County, especially if around water. You never know what you will see....

McCulloch or Menard County would be a very good choices. Pretty good deer numbers and quality in a lot of areas of the county. Lot of axis in the county and a few blackbucks. Turkey, quail and dove for bird hunting. Throw in a growing hog population along with predator hunting.

These and parts of Brown County can produce some great hunting also.

Trickham....does that bring back memories. The best dove place we ever had was just west (like 700 yards west) of Trickham in Coleman County just west of the cemetery. This was back in the mid '90s. We leased directly from the landowner for a few years and had some outstanding dove hunting, then some lease broker got wind of it. The price tripled and so did the hunters. Was great while it lasted though.

Sounds like you were close to Brookesmith?

I'm with the OP on Coleman County....had several good spots there over the years and loved the overall hunting opportunities. Good deer, great dove hunting and pretty good waterfowl on a few places. Also had some great tank fishing. Other counties in the area that I really like are Brown, Mills, Hamilton and Comanche.

Jack county also has a nice variety of wildlife and some good bucks. The problem with the closer in Cross Timber counties to the metromess can be the higher hunting pressure which often pushes deer movements to more nocturnal in nature. Can definitely be a tradeoff. I've heard good things about Shackelford and Callahan counties, both a little further out from the metromess.

I've seen plenty of 150+ class deer harvested and brought in to ClearFork processing in Graham, TX over the past 6 years of hunting Young county. Actually a lot more than I ever expected to have seen when I purchased out there. As mentioned, the proximity to metromess increases hunting pressure which can create a bit of nocturnal type deer activity earlier in season. I do agree with the variety of game comment though.

For all around hard to beat Frio, zavala, McMullen, la salle.

Big deer, great dove and quail, if you have water ducks are gonna be there. More hogs and predators for off season activities

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I thought OP was soliciting other good hunting counties in Cross Timbers region besides Coleman? If we were talking statewide, I'd toss out Webb, Maverick and Dimitt counties too but didn't think we were.

There are 150-180 class deer killed LF in McCulloch county every year. There are some bigger ranches that produce those kinds of deer each year with good management and rainfall.

Ranch, I thought McCulloch was maybe Edwards Plateau, Menard too?

McCulloch joins Concho on the west side of the county and Coleman on the North side of the county. It might not be considered Cross Timbers but it is as close as you can get. Concho joins Menard.

Interesting Ranch, that EcoRegion map a few posts above doesn't match the tpwd link you attached above. The tpwd link goes out a lot more west to include Tom Green in Cross Timbers. I was thinking like the EcoRegion Map showing that county to be in Edwards to Rolling Plains. Too many good counties around I guess.

I would call them Edwards Plateau also...Concho, Menard and Tom Green for sure. McCulloch is close and maybe split a little.

I would call Menard more Edwards Plateau. I would call Tom Green more West Texas. I would call Concho more Cross Timbers as well as McCulloch, both are similar in terrain and habitat.
