Stopped by SWFA yesterday and couldn't pass up this Remington Classic chambered in 8 MM Mauser (8x57JS). I'm a sucker for the oddballs and this one fills that bill in a rifle that also happens to fit me perfectly. The round basically duplicates the .30-30 in the lighter American load with a 170 grain bullet and the .30-06 in the hotter Norma 175 and 196 grain loads. I am a sucker for the Remington Classics and the cool rounds they were produced in.

That is a good looking gun!

I love 8x57! I regularly use a much uglier (much, much uglier) Yugo M48 for pigs and deer, and it really puts a smack on them. My son and nephews have always enjoyed shooting it as the recoil is more shove than slap in most loads. Reloading really opens up the potential for the cartridge and provides far better bullet selection over OTC ammo.

Congrats and enjoy!

Nice grab there young man. cheers

As mentioned reloading opens the door bigtime in a modern receiver to explore all the potential of this round....and has been on my radar as a candidate for the perfect Old Mans low recoil with today's mo bettah booitz shooter. Have Fun

Nice score.

I love the oddballs as well. Took 2 deer and a porcupine with my 35 Whelen this past deer season.

Very nice! I've been hand loading and shooting 8x57 JS for a long time, and I still keep coming back to it. Sierra 175 grain Pro Hunter bullets and IMR 4064 powder are the ticket. Hard hitting, accurate round for deer and hogs.

You are gonna like it. cheers

I've got a German M98 from WWII and it shoots well. I would love to have an 8x57 in a modern rifle. Same goes for 7x57 too. Congrats.

There was a Classic in .35 Whelen sitting right next to it! Complete with old style ramp and hooded sights. It was a VERY difficult decision. I am furiously trying to put this out of my mind lest I go back..... smile

Thanks guys!
I am resolved to give my old Sako .270 a rest and rotate between the Euro calibers (6.5x55, 7x57,8x57) this upcoming deer season.

Good looking rifle in a classic caliber, congrats on the find.

Also a fan of the classic series of 700's. 17 Rem, 7mm-08 and 350 Rem Mag.

You will enjoy it. Several years back I came across a M98 that had been restocked with Boyds traditional stock, cut & crowned, drilled and tapped, bolt lowered and safety changed out. I put a Redfield 2 3/4 scope on it because I needed field of view. Been a great gun and the Mauser action is hard to beat when it comes to smooth actions.

I had that exact rifle. It liked 160 gr Barnes TSX behind Norma powder. I'll update this with my exact load after I get off of work! lol

Pretty rifle you got there. I never knew much about the round, just knew a guy who'd take me hunting when my dad was on call used one and killed a lot of critters with it.

My dad brought back an 8mm Mauser from Germany in WWII, and it was his deer hunting rifle until he died. My sister inherited it, and three generations of her family have killed deer with it. I always liked it, so I bought a sporterized version at a gun show a few years ago. I took it hunting a few times, but never got a shot at a deer. I took my son on his first deer hunt a couple of years ago and he plugged a doe from 125 yards. So guess who has claimed that one, now? I would love to find a modern one from Ruger or Remington. Yours is really sweet!
