Never happened to me, but I haven't bought many handguns from folks. Have seized a few though.
Bad deal for your $$, but a happy owner somewhere soon.

No, it was a customer of mine. He used to be a good one, and so I figured I'd help him out with some moving money. Quickly called him back and told him what was going on. He stated he knew nothing about it, and I believe him. Said he horse traded back in the day and knew little to nothing about the pistol, he just used as a trcuk gun. He was profusely apologetic.

You know, that was my initial thought. But the more I think about it, Im glad that someone will either get their gun back, or help solve a crime if it was used in one. Sucks that Im out the $, but I would hope something like this would happen if one of my guns was ever stolen.

I think I'd be asking my customer for the money back. Regardless if he knew nothing about it I think he should be the one out the money not you.

In my own personal dealings, no. But in a capacity of working as a clerk in a pawnshop - yep. Naturally we did things legal and on the up and up getting their complete info from the DL, etc. and providing both Sheriff's office and local PD copies of every transaction.
If we took in stolen merchandise, it was recovered and given back to the owner with the pawnshop out the money they had given for it. If we suspected something was hinky we wouldn't deal with the person but I remember one occasion where the person was a regular so we didn't anticipate any problems. The merchandise I took in turned out to be stolen so not only was the shop out the money, but since the transaction was fully documented you get to go in to the PD and sign statements to testify against the sleaze balls.

If the guy you bought it from doesn't know anything he is not breaking a law. It doesn't make a difference in the law if you get anything from a buyer or seller of a gun if he isn't a FFL dealer. It just makes one feel better.
