About to stock up on some 9MM ammo and was wanting opinions on the different grains. I've usually shot 115 gr. due to cost and availability. Any thoughts on the best for SD? And does anyone train/shoot one weight and use a different weight for their SD round?
My initial thought is to go with 115 FMJ in bulk for target and get a few boxes of the same grain in hollow point SD just for consistency. Appreciate any thoughts either way.

I build and plink/practice 115s and "carry" expensive Hornady 147s. POI is not that different at "combat distances", only on range paper. Academy has had Winnie 115 FMJ bullets for loading pretty cheap lately, just cooked some up and started development for my unit yesterday. No use in burning up the high dollar stuff. Hornady's Critical Defense rounds aren't just heavier bullets, they're also hotter than FMJ plinkers so they should be close.
Pass the gravy.

I shoot 124gr HD/SD ammo, Fed 124gr HST (non +P)
I shoot 124gr FMJ for practice. Real close POA/POI same for both.

I only shoot 124gr bullets. Carry HP for SD and FMJ at the range. I reload so it's still cheaper than buying retail.

I had heard that speer gold dot 124 grain +p are good. Shot some Monday and they were hitting about 4" below point of aim at 10 and 15 yards. Cheap 115 FMJ target ammo (WWB, Federal) was hitting at POA.
Do I have to modify my sights in order to get this round to shoot to POA? I'd prefer my SD ammo to hit where I aim and not have to modify my sight picture.
This was with a Glock 19.
Kinda bummed as I have several boxes of the gold dots and they are expensive.

Well, I went ahead and ordered a couple boxes of the Federal American Eagle Personal Defense Combo Pack. Each box comes with 20 rounds of 124 gr. Hydra-Shock and 100 rounds of 124 gr. FMJ. Cheaper Than Dirt had it from one of their warehouses for $41.
Got a few boxes of old cheap 115 gr. FMJ I'm going to run through first, but will be giving these a try shortly.

$41 for 20 rounds or 2 boxes of 20 rounds? $41 for 20 rounds of Hydra-Shock SD and 100 rounds of FMJ. Combo pack. I'd seen it other places, Academy, etc., but never this cheap. Even with shipping it seemed like a bargain since I picked up a couple. http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/AMM-475
