Which 30.06 would you guys recommend? Preferably bolt action and not going to break the bank.

Savage 111 with the Nikon prostaff 3-9x40 package. Usually around $500 depending on where you get it. That's the not going to break the bank option. Even less expensive would be the savage axis II which also comes with an accutrigger.

A little high but no tax or transfer fees. Actually not a bad out the door price for rifle only.

Get the classic, Remington 700 BDL at Wal Mart. If you get tired of the 06 you have one heck of a platform to build on

Weatherby vanguard and Lazerguard have been great shooters for years. I did pickup a Ruger that I loaded for that shoots bug holes as well.

Montana Rifle Company. Pick your preference of wood or synthetic, and stainless or blued carbon steel.

I have the Savage in 30-06. Good trigger, very accurate, nice scope. Hard to beat for the money.

Some of these guns might fall into the "break the bank" category. Though he didn't give an actual budget.

I had a marlin x7 that shot very well. I now have a 700 CDL and LOVE it.

I'd go to a Cabela's or Bass Pro or maybe Gander Mountain and actually handle as many as possible. You'll know when you find the right one. Look up the price at a decent online place, like Bud's, and then make the call on where to buy. Online is usually cheaper, but not always. Also, I'm willing to pay a reasonable premium to the local place for the opportunity to touch before I buy.

I'd say top of the budget would be around $700.

Ruger American is a good rifle and you will stay under 700.00 bucks even after you add the extra, scope, sling and such.

Are you sure you want a .30-06? I mean, the possible only decision worse than that would be one of the .257's (roberts, weatherby, etc). You should really be looking at a .243, 264 or .284 chambering for the better bc options

Not real popular down here, as they are in the north east & ACC/SEC country but I bought a Thompson Center Venture that I was impressed with the fit & finish. Look at the website for the details, but it came with an accuracy guarantee and lifetime warranty for about Ruger American prices....with lots more features.
Never did get to shoot it...got a trade offer on it I could not refuse. Last year they had a Rebate in the Spring, and later in the Fall for $75 bux back. I could buy another one without hesitation, specially in the 6.5x284 ltd production or a 6.5x55 in open stock with both in a 8 twist barrel that uses the same 5R rifleing as PacNor does in their custom barrels.
All of TC is now owned by Smith & Wesson, and producution I think has been moved to S&W's Springfield MA from the Rochchester NH TC plant.
They ain't purty but better lookin to me than the RA's with that skinny egg shaped round oval forearm that will not lay flat on shooting bags or a window ledge of a box blind. Ron

I'm just kidding I hope I misunderstood this opinion. If not,,,it may possibly be the dumbest thing I've ever read on this forum.

Went to quote and beat up on ya, then saw what you intended to post. I fixed it for you (not my words - reformatted so we can see it).
