Hello all. I am brand new here and was hoping to get some info. I just bought a small place about 8 miles N/E of Roby. It is covered up with sign, hog and deer. A little mesquite pasture and a little CRP surrounded by big pastures and crop land. Just wondering what the quality and quantity of the deer herd is like in that area. I did all the research I could do but the guys that hunt the area are the real experts. Any helpful info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Wont have the numbers but do have some Big Bucks. Ton of pigs! We used to be about 5 miles east of Roby. We killed 6 deer in the 140's-150's in two years. Hogs were a problem. Too Many!!Tons of Turkey!!

First of all, welcome to the forum welcome If you're seeing good sign then you probably made a good purchase. Don't be discouraged if you don't see lots of deer. They're there, just scattered mainly along drainages, creeks, water etc. Put your feeders near a heavily used trail near brush. Those west Texas deer will walk out in the open SOMETIMES, but mostly hang near thicker brush. Congratulations on your new place, and post pictures, please.

I just thought of something I'd like to share. Don't put your stand any closer than about 150- 200 yards from the feeder. Obviously bow hunting could be a problem. Just my observations from the last 20 or so years in that country.

welcome Like anything else location and neighbors will dictate just how good hunting can be.

My group has hunted a section Northwest of Roby for the last 2 years. Deer were few and far between. We had a 130" deer taken this year but probably didn't see 4 or 5 deer this season. Maybe 2 doe total. We had a ton of Dove and Turkey.

Is your place off 1224 by Royston?

Its about 10 miles west on 180 and north on CR 333. Had a great landowner and really nice set up for camp and an all around good place with the exception of the lack of deer.

Yeah, the place is close to Royston. Spent today there scouting. Saw 3 does, lots of tracks and pig sign. Got a camera set up and am stoked to see what shows. Looks like the yotes need some lead therapy too!

Coyotes are horrible around that area. Other hunters around us said they have noticed a severe increase in the amount of coyotes and a decrease in the amount of deer they have seen in the last 3 to 4 years.

Sprig, WTF is up with you and the tater biscuit thing, did you learn a new phrase? BTW, Fisher is a great place to hunt, but Yes, the 'yotes are bad. Quite a few bobcats as well.

There are few deer in that area but some good ones. Plenty of pigs and coyotes.

The drought has hit that area hard which favors the yotes. I'm betting on the long term. Fingers crossed. ...

I wouldn't judge the whitetail hunting by what you hear and see this season, as it was unusually wet and green, so the deer just didn't move that much during the day. The area has the potential for very good deer. Since you own the land, the first thing I would do is start trapping hogs, and shooting them on sight whenever the opportunity presents itself. Also hog panel all your feeders. Try to find your neighbors and see what they are doing hunting wise. Hopefully not meat hunters. Cooperation among neighbors on small properties will define the type of hunting you'll end up with. Good luck with your new land and welcome

Thanks pitchfork. I am trying to find the neighbors but no luck yet. The guy that sold it is a real estate guy from Austin who got it for quail and only set foot on it 3 times. Couldn't even tell me where the water meter is!
