A goal for the new year is to either buy or put together a .308 to start learning how to shoot out to 600-800 yards. I have had a savage before and really liked it but was considering other brands this time around. I came across the below at Cabelas. I can't find much on Google in regards to that rifle or model. Anyone have any information about it? Are there aftermarket stocks made for another model that would fit this one with the DBM?

I have never handled this model personally but I can tell you there are after market stocks and custom magazines you can buy.

If price is not an issue, Manners will inlet the stock for you so the stock will fit the action perfectly. Other than mannaers, Stockade specializes in savage stocks, give them a call and they can help you. Plus their money saver stocks can be had for under 300, pretty good deal.

I say just buy it and start working on it, ordering the stock will take time and you can practice shooting with it while you wait. Best part is when/if you burn the barrel out it takes all of 5 minutes to put on a new custom barrel.

Stick with Savage or try Remington's? Does it really matter either way?

My goal is put together something that I can take to a class (FiremanJG maybe) and learn to use the scope to make adjustments and make long shots. I hunt, but very little. This isn't about hunting near as much as it is the challenge of hitting a target way over there.

I really like the look of the Remington long range in the B&C m40 stock but they don't have it in a .308. On my other Savage I loved everything about it except for the stock. Is there a factory rifle, that comes with a good stock? Or will anything have to be replaced?

You won't be disappointed in the rifle. I have almost the same rifle, except I have the non threaded 24 inch barrel. I put a Vortex Viper PST on top and shot this at 300 yds


I didn't like the feel of the factory stock so I switched it for the HS-Precision

Savage does make a Model 10 that has a HS-Precision stock and one with a McMillan stock. Both are $1200-1500 respectively. But neither can be had with the 10 round mag and threaded barrel from the factory.

Looks like a distributor special model. I have a distributor special model 10P-SR. Mine has 18" heavy barrel with 5r rifling and threaded muzzle. It has the same stock as the model you are looking at, and while it's not great, it shoots well enough for now that I'm using it in the Hunter rifle challenge tomorrow.

That rifle looks like a great deal for the price. I'm tempted to pick one up myself...

That's a pretty good price on the Savage for what you get, though.

You know, the FN SPR A1 will run ~$1500

With that, you get the only match grade chrome lined barrel available anywhere, a McMillan stock, and a detachable magazine (10 rounders will run about $50) in a pre 64 win70 action.

I don't think you'll find a better value for a factory built rifle if that's in your price range

RCINTX, I am fairly new to this but have spent a great deal of time researching, reading, and talking to a lot of people. Most any factory Savage, Remington or Tikka will shoot "way over there" out of the box and a little gunsmithing,(bedding, lapping, floating the bbl, etc.), will make them even better (my factory Rem. can do 3/8" if I do my part)....it just depends on how much you want to invest in both time and money. Whatever you decide, I highly recommend getting with FiremanJG for a great lesson and Chad for custom loads if you're not planning on doing your own. There is a great deal to learn about this kind of shooting....and it's damned fun doing it!

Excellent responses guys. I loved my other Savage, just stopped shooting it, fell in love with something else and sold it. I need a time machine. I am going to try and make it by Cabela's and see it in person and see what I think.

I have never spent more than about $300 scope. I told myself I would spend what needed to be spent to not be left wanting later, "buy once, cry once" mentality. With that being said, these two are my first picks and in the same general price range. Is there anything cheaper or another option?

I don't know if your heart is set on those scopes, but you should really check out Vortex. I got a used Viper PST FFP for 650. Doesn't get much better than that IMO, Vortex has a lifetime warranty and you can send a purchased used scope to them to check out and make sure its 100%.

What model are you shooting? I tried to find a Vortex FFP on their site around that price range and couldn't do it. I am not set on anything, those are 2 of the most "internet recommended" I have found.

I have a Savage 10FP that came with a 24" threaded and fluted heavy barrel. This model has the H&S Precision stock with aluminum bedding. The rifle cost about $1,000 and I mounted a Vortex Viper PST with Seekins base and rings for another $1,100. Here is a five shot group at 100yds, on a windy day, using out-of-the-box factory ammo:

It is the Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP model. I bought it used off a member on here. He was a super nice guy, military man who shoots competitively, I wish I could remember his name. Brand new they are closer to $1,000 but he gave me a heck of a deal. Vortex has a lifetime unconditional warranty which is why I don't mind buying them used.

Cameraland also has really good deals, I just looked at it and found THIS SCOPE

The two you posted are also very fine scopes, although my love for Bushnell has falls greatly over the past few years.

I'm definitely going to look at the vortex scopes. From what you've said about the warranty you can't go wrong used. Anywhere to look for a used scope besides the classifieds?

What about suppressors or muzzle brakes? I read a page about what the pros use and many more use a $100 muzzle brake than a $1000 suppressor. Honestly I would have a suppressor if it wasn't for the cost and wait time. Is it worth it? Is there an impact good or bad for accuracy?

The only downside to supressors is cost and added cleaning.

The downside to brakes is no one will like you anymore. That's mainly from the noise directed at them more instead of down range, and the percussion they will feel

The pst is a great scope and worth the money in the price range. As for muzzle break I have a JEC and it is awesome, virtually took out all the recoil from my 243. I really recommend a break for the riffle.
