I don't personally take much interest in them but always see a following. Now I have a chance to trade for a 280 and curious what they are worth. I'd probably just trade it right back off unless I shoot it and fall in love.

A lot depends on the which #1 it is. Hopefully one of the guys on here that is a Ruger dealer specializing in #1s will join in. I can tell you I like #1s for hunting. Down to one right now in 7X57

they're worth $1000 - $1500

depending on condition, caliber, stock grade

a Ruger No. 1 in .22PPC is around $1200 low end

280s are not to common. You want have any problem getting rid of it if you get it, assuming it's in good condition and unaltered.

Pics look good and clean. Supposed to meet him either today or Sunday if we can make our schedules work out. I can email or text a pic but for some reason I can't get them to upload from my phone.

Anything I need to look at or for? I know nothing about these other than the fact they have a following.

This and I would just inspect it like you would any other used rifle purchase. Some of the No. 1's had extraordinary wood. You will know that immediately. There was one posted on here either in the photo section or classifieds that was one of the nicest rifles I have ever seen. The wood was gorgeous. I have a buddy that collects them. I will ask if he has the 280

Red pad ones are older, black recoil pad ones are newer.
It is probably a 1-B in 280. That means a 26" barrel, no sights and a "beavertail" fore end.
If it's not beat up, even with plain wood and a black pad should go for $750+ easily....

Only a couple No. 1 version ever came with open sights, a .280 ought to be scarce and worth even more than a new one, .257 Roberts also bring a premium price. I got a couple of them and would love to find one in .308 and .257 Roberts, some are finicky and might require a bedding job. they are beautiful rifles, I own a Varminter .22-250 that is a tack driver.

Got a bunch of pics if someone that knows what they are looking at wants to tell me what they think. I'm supposed to meet him tomorrow so I need a pretty quick answer.
