Anyone here have experience with planting sesame for doves?
We have always hunted over sunflowers or dove weed, but are considering planting part of our coastal field in sesame later this year. This is in Live Oak county.
I have read that it takes around 100 days to seed, so I would assume June would be the time to plant? How do we need to prep the field? Can we broadcast it, or is it worth getting someone to plant it in rows? Does it need to be shredded right before season?
Any advice is appreciated....

We have planted one of our plots in Tilden with sesame a few times. The doves really are drawn to it. We didn't hire anyone plant it. Just prepare the ground with a disk, broadcast the seed and some fertilizer then turn it under again. One of our neighbors drags his field with a cattle panel after spreading the seed so they don't get too deep. I don't remember the exact timing on the planting. I believe it was mid may. We wanted the birds to be in there thick prior to the season. You couldn't run them out once they found the seeds. My dog retrieved over 250 birds out of that field the first year (not all mine).
Before hunting it, we shredded the perimeter of the field and a couple of strips through the middle. About two weeks into the season, we shredded some more.

June may be a little late in there's not enough rain. Plant when there's sufficient moisture to germinate the seed.

Sesame is usually planted in June. Some folks follow up with it right behind wheat harvest.
The seed is extremely small and doesn't take much dirt to cover it.
When picking a variety to plant, you would want a type that releases the seeds from the pods after it drys.
Sesaco has made a variety that stays inside the pod after it dries down, making it good for farming and harvest...I would assume you would want a type that doesn't hold the seed.
You mentioned rows, if it were me and it were strictly for dove, I would probably drill it.
Sesame is planted in 7.5", 15", 30", 36", and 40" rows.
Your 7.5" and 15" would come from a drill, the other spacing would be from a planter.
I think having a drill and plugging up every other hold to drill 15" would probably be the way I'd plant it.
Probably don't have to get that involved if it's just for birds though.
Just something to think about.
