Already have a buck at the lease that has shed. It's a bit early for us. Any thoughts on why they might shed earlier or later in any given year?

Will the average shed date for the herd vary a lot depending on the year or does it depend on the variables you described for each buck?

Injury or wounded would be my first guess.

I shot one about 10 years ago in December because he had a severely screwed up front leg. He had already dropped one side of his rack and the other side came off in my hand when I went to drag him to the ATV.

All still carrying up in Montague. I would say injury or stress.

I have a couple 2.5 yrs old with one side gone already. And I saw one just a bit older same way this evening. Its earliest I've ever seen bucks drop antlers here. All the mature bucks still holding

This morning I found a young deer shed. About the earliest I have seen that.

2 on bottom are fresh from Saturday. This buck was the first to rub out of velvet at the beginning of September. Maybe a early fawn on his birthday?

Here he is.

It will be interesting to see if a lot more bucks shed early this year. Hey Buldog4949, I like the PVC coon guards! Do they work better than a cage?

Yes they do seem to work better. It seemed the cages just gave them more footholds to grab onto to pull themselves up. We also changed our feeders to the Primos Vault feeders which has really really helped and we have seen only one coon up on the feeder for three pictures and that was it and we run eight feeders

We hunted in El Campo this past weekend for the end of youth season, and watched two bucks fight on Saturday morning. Then Saturday night, we saw a different buck that had shed his right side. So it has to be different for each buck.
