Building a 6.8. Can't decide between 18 or 16 barrel.

I only want a place to mount a hog light and also have a stud for a simple carry sling. Want something that looks clean, feels good in hand, and not like a cheese grater with rail sections everywhere.

What are some good options?

Nordic Components for a cheaper alternative. Sling stud and rail sections mount right up wherever you want them. USA made, too.

I felt the same way and was on a tight budget. So I ordered an ALG Emr last week. I hope it comes in pretty quick. $140 12" rail from primary arms.

If you are going for weight & small diameter,

BCM KMR is the lightest
Noveske NSR is next I think
DD has a keymod now

ALG Modular Rail http://algdefense.com/12-ergonomic-modular-rail-black.html

Fortis makes one

Geissele, Magpul are doing an M-Lok rail attachment

Geissele also has a Keymod rail

My BCM KMR is

Actual length when measured to flare is 15.0"
Mounting hardware, 2.2oz, for a total of 8.1oz on a very long 15” rail.

While I love all the options here, they are all kind of expensive if all you want to do is mount a flashlight and a sling stud.

Is your barrel going to have a low profile gas block, or an A2 FSB?

I haven't decided. I have a stripped lower, stripped upper, and upper kit so far. I had originally though about basically building an M4 carbine with A2 front sight.

Now I'm leaning toward 18" barrel, floated handguard, houge grip and CTR stock. I want a more compact and easy to handle weapon for hog hunting at night.I have a .270 and 30-30 but like the idea of something that can get more shots off quickly. I had fun building the first AR so just want a project that will fill a niche.

How well does that upper work with 120gr SST 6.8 ammo? bolt

IMO, I'd go with a 16" barrel, mid length gas, and a rifle length YHM semi-smooth rail. I have this same setup on my 5.56 gun and LOVE it.

Note: I'm not sure if there is any difference in reliability between carbine and mid length gas systems on a 6.8SPC barrel. You probably better check before you try to order a mid length gas 16" 6.8 barrel.

I would stay away from 18" because you don't need the extra length. My FFL has slayed dozens of pigs and deer with a 12.5" 6.8 and swears by it.
