I have a 16 inch DI AR 556 I do not reload
It is strictly my pig hunting gun.
I keep going back and forth on whether or not it is worth it to can it.
2 weeks ago I took a shot at a pig running by and I didnt have time to get my ear protection on and my frickin ears are still ringing from it.
What are the pros and cons?

I think you answered your own question. Pros: it's more quiet and adds about 7" to barrel length. Cons: it cost about $1000

If you shoot a young deer because a neighbor will shoot it, you are that neighbor.

I went through this debate myself, finally decided to get a suppressor.
Why? I want to keep hunting pressure down where I hunt and save my hearing.
Gun trust: $200 Stamp: $200 Suppressor: $600 (Looking at the Griffin Armament sportsman or silencerco harvester)
I am right at $1,000 total for everything, next time I buy a suppressor it will be much cheaper.
Pros: - Reduce sound and increase concealment - Save Hearing - More Enjoyment - Reduce pressure
Cons: - Spending money
Seems like a no brainier to me.

The answer is to always suppress. The only negative is length and weight. IMO any cost associated with running suppressors is offset by saving your hearing.

I don't understand the question. There are people who choose NOT to suppress? Length and weight are the physical negatives but they make lighter suppressors for that reason.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Seems like a no brainier to me. I happen to be looking at those two as well. You leaning toward one or the other? I didn't find many reviews on the Griffin.

I only saw 1 review on YouTube of the Griffin sportsman, otherwise it's a new can that hasn't been tested much. I called up silencer shop, talked to the guy and he said it is almost identical to the silencerco harvester. He said he likes both and they are great for bolt action rifles. I just wish silencer shop carried the tapered mount Griffin model, all they have us the thread on. I personally do not like the muzzle break on the silencerco harvester. Apparently it helps reduce recoil? Both come with a lifetime warrenty which is nice.

Having shot a can for years now, I still wear hearing protection when I practice.
If only taking one or two shots, no hearing protection is fine. If I plan on taking more shots than that, out come the foam ear plugs.
The best can in the world can't take away the crack of a bullet. Unless, of course, you are shooting subsonics.

I've put 50-60 rounds through my 300WM with my suppressor on in one setting, with no hearing protection. No issues here at all. I love shooting suppressed. Can't remember the last time I shot without a can.

The Griffin Taper mount does look more robust than the other one. The Silencrco Omega looks interesting as well. And to the OP, sorry for the thread hijack. I vote to suppress, I just did my trust and will order a can soon. I too forget the earplugs often when hunting and would like to not have to worry about hearing loss.

Sounds like some of you have some experience. Thanks for your answers. Are there no other cons other than cost and of course having to obey an unconstitutional law and get a trust for a law that shouldnt even be on the books.
I see they have some smaller 4 and 5 inch cans since no way would I want a long 7 inch suppressor. Do the shorter ones have negative aspects to them?

I am ordering that and a .22 sparrow next week for sure!

Yes, generally speaking they are louder because they do not have as many baffles. I would opt for a 7" for most applications and 9" for the big magnums.

I have not seen the Omega! I am ordering that and a .22 sparrow next week for sure! That's funny, I have just about come to the same conclusion today also. It's a few hundred more, but since I'd like to use it on some AR's as well I think it'll be worth it. It's shorter, only a couple ounces heavier and they're saying it's quieter. Bigfoot, all of the cans I'm looking at are 7" and up. Little that I know about them, I'd be afraid to skimp on volume for fear I'd be real disappointed with sound suppression. If it's not gonna be hearing safe, what's the point of all this time and expense?

Suppress!! Ordered my yesterday. $250 for Trust(done by attorney) $200 for Stamp $550 + tax for suppressor Total was around $1050 (don't tell my wife) After lots of research, I chose to go with the Silencerco Specwar 556 with the Trifecta FH. Can't wait to get it in and try it out. Keith
