So I am seeing stories about the elephant hunt that was supposed to be auctioned off today was cancelled supposedly due to pressure by animal rights groups. If this is true then it sends a bad message that these people can win through intimidation. They are on the Dallas Safari Club's Facebook page now posting their hateful messages and gloating.

Wouldn't surprise me. There's plenty of people, including those that hunt, that won't support legal means of hunting just because they wouldn't do it.

Last year's successful rhino hunt auction really got in the news, death threats, etc. I hadn't even heard about this. Might it have anything to do with our USFW currently banning importation of trophy ivory from Zimbabwe and Tanzania, ostensibly due to failure to control poaching and questionable survey techniques?

I never attend the auctions. My daughter picked me up yesterday evening at the show and we did pass this pitifully tiny group of mis-guided souls with poorly made poster signs.

It's sad, really. These people do more harm than good. The money raised would have gone a long way protecting elephants from poachers, who are the real threat to the species.

Wouldn't call 350K for a rhino auction successful. They just need to have the auctions elsewhere if they're going to chicken out.

Heck, a Dallas area attorney bid 1.4 million on a hunt less than a month later that they donated back last year at another auction. Think of the press that would've gotten them and yet wanted no part of it.

There was no elephant auction on the printed auction schedule. There was a full size painting of an elephant on the schedule, but no actual elephant was on the auction guide. I just spent the last three days at the convention, and I don't believe the DSC will back down from anyone. There's plenty of fight and the willingness to spend what it takes to protect the hunting rights of Texans, Americans and other hunters world wide. I personally attended almost all of the auctions scheduled during the event, bid on several and won 4 silent auctions.

From what I can gather the hunt was withdrawn by the provider.

Dallas Morning News and this post say DSC withdrew it.
If that is not the case, very irresponsible/unfair to lay this at the feet of the DSC.

You would think the opponents of the hunt would just buy it out. That way they would own the hunt and could do whatever they wish. Oh, but that would cost them real money and not just protest.

SCone. Brilliant post...The've got a bulldog mouth and a Chihuahua's arse, that's why they don't buy it out. Plus, they can use the money saved to further their anti-hunting agenda. A bunch of idiots that know exactly what they're doing. Scary.

This article by Jim Goad over the uproar over Kendall Jones pretty much sums up the mentality of these animal rights types.

Animal rights groups are monitoring this forum hourly. Looking at our comments about gut shooting hogs and leaving them to die while crying about a deer not found or a duck not retrieved. High vs low fencing, canned hunts, pay by the size of antlers, and baiting with feeders, corporate hunts, and dragging these articles to soccer games and Bible class study. One more reason why hunting is declining. JMO, but I hear it at ball games, airports, lunchrooms.

I find it hard to believe that the Dallas Safari Club would give in to the anti-hunters.
