I had the same problem with some Norma .280 brass. I ran them over my pocket uniformer and all was fixed.

Yes. it's normal, for the Norma/Nosler brass to be tight. You want that. After multiple firings, the primer pocket is what gives out the quickest.

I have always been told a hand priming tool may work better, may give one a try.

I was actually working with some Norma 300WM brass for their second loading last night. I had the same problem I had above with the .280 brass. You almost need a hammer to get the primers into the cases. They were tough to get in the first time, and just as tough to get in the second time. I use the RCBS hand priming tool. I did not run them over my pocket uniformer, but will. I pulled some new Hornady brass that I picked up. Ran a primer in that one just to see, nice solid seating without much effort. I never have any problems with my Nosler, Hornady, or Lapua brass, but that is 2 batches of Norma brass that I have had the same problem with. I don't know if the pockets are just not uniform or the brass is hard as a brick, but I think I may be done with Norma.

Interesting. I prefer the brass that has tight primer pockets (like Norma and Nosler), since I can get more reloads out of them. Having brass with tight primer pockets and running them over a primer uniformer to open them up kind of goes against reason, IMO. If you use a press mounted priming tool, it doesn't matter how tight they are. The primer will go in. Sure a hand primer may be hard. But opening up a primer pocket only reduces your number of reloads. Kind of goes against my reasoning for wanting to reload my brass as much as possible.

Chad, I understand what you are saying, but I prefer having my primer pockets uniform as well as my flash holes. In my way of thinking, the primer should be tight going in, no doubt. But, without the pocket being uniform, it is like trying to put a round peg in a square hole. Sure a press mounted tool gives you more leverage than a hand tool, but should you really need that kind of pressure to cram primers in? I have been loading for the last 30 years, and I remember the days of the old RCBS presses with the little lever that you had to load one primer at a time and push it under the shell holder. What a PIA now. I figure that is why hand primers are so popular. They give you a great feel when the primer is properly seated in the bottom of the case.

IME, I have seen no reduction in my brass life doing it the way I have been doing it. In fact, Nosler and Lapua brass really don't even need it, the stuff is practically perfect out of the box. I know you do this for a living and probably crank out more rounds in a month than I do in a year, so I will concede to your experience and to your opinion.

You can use your case mouth chamfer tool, the gadget that you twirl to put a bevel on the mouth of the case, to assist the primer seating. Just slightly chamfer the case's primer pocket opening to achieve a bevel that will allow the primer to slide in place without canting. I also will use my primer pocket uniformer to standardize all the pockets.

Norma makes the best .300WM brass imo. If you want to toss your brass, send it to me....I'll pay the post. But your chamfer tool will get you through this, I bet.
