I am trying to learn to age deer with their jaw bones. I am thinking my deer this year was 4-4.5. I am basing this from the TPWD
description:
1. dentine in tooth 4 is twice as wide as enamel
2. dentine in tooth 5 is wider than the enamel
3.The 6 tooth has concavity, but appears to slope more forward, than rearward.

I have never done this before, so if I am misunderstanding something, please tell me. I have attached pics of the jaw and deer. soory for repost on deer. Its not a full body pic, but does show body.

My wife would kill me if I had that sitting on a dinner plate in the kitchen.

I think you are correct. If it is a public land deer especially eats tx then I'm gonna lean toward 5.5. Usually deer on public land or leases that don't feed much and in non sandy soil like out west won't wear as fast.

I do LOTS of euro mounts every year, and most come from east Texas. I age and catalog every jaw from every one of those deer. I even have hundreds of samples I keep in the freezer for comparison. All that being said, I'd say that deer is 4.5 yrs old. Could be 5.5, but I don't think so. Definitely NOT 3.5 based on that dentine/enamel.
My 2 cents.....

Good to know I was right/close to right. I have some other deer I wish I would have aged, so I started keeping up with it now.

the tooth wear thing is not always accurate
it depends on a lot of factors
in some sandy areas deer that feed off the ground wear them down quickly
and deer that browse more than feed off the ground also show a lot less wear
all said the deer is at least 4.5 in my opinion
and could be older ...

That buck was older than 4.5. Last cusp is worn flat.

While hard to see from the pics, im going with Stx and saying he is older than 4.5. That last cusp is worn good, and look at some of the front teeth, like the second one back, it appears in the photos to be about 1/2 worn down, you wont see that on a 4 year old in my experience. I have jaws off a few known age 4.5 year old deer that we have pictures of their whole life that don't show near that much wear... and we are in a sandy environment.

strange that his one back molar is worn so much and the others are still good and sharp. Other wise id say 4.5. Is the other side worn just as much? looks a bit sharper. Kill picture of the buck looks like 4-5yr old also

If the last cusp was angled to the outside I would call him a 4 yr old. But worn flat and that much dentine/enamel wear on the other teeth show the age. You will commonly see jawbones from the same buck with different tooth wear from side to side. The buck appears to be at least a 5 yr old in that pic to me.

I am going with 5 yo as well. He has more wear than a 4 yo and I think his dentin is as wide or wider anyway on #6

How do you go about sending it off and having it aged?

Never personally done it, but do a google search or make a post on here asking about it someone has done it. You mail it/a tooth, whatever they ask for to them and they scientifically age the tooth. It costs a little, but it would be worth it to me if I had a deer I was wondering about.

We send off any trophys 5.5 or better not to confirm but mainly to keep the **ing to a minimal..They have told us the true ONLY way to know EXACTLY how old a Deer is...Is watch him hit the ground and follow him till he expires, but its a nice Tool to use as a outside perspective.
Have had great luck with these guys and its 20 bucks to send off the bottom two teeth...
