We all have met the "got eem".. if hard to tell at times.. who got the bird.. If was always a toss up if me or brother, when birds fell was first to ask "did you shoot?" When on one of first trips, with my young son.. he told me.. " I think Uncle Benny is claming my birds.." Almost rolled on ground, was so funny.. so naturally I told son, that he would do that.. its just part of fun of hunting
There is no right or wrong way, to approch.. but have read that the tuffer shots for righties.. is left to right.. stands to reason.. I figured out too late in life, That Tarzon really didn't just find a book in the jungle, and teach himself to read and speak English.. so try now to learn more from others..

I just had a phone conversation with my friend who has the red setters. He's on a five day two ranch south Texas loop. They used only his dogs at the first stop. He used the word exasperated when telling me about the people approaching the covey point. Two different pointed coveys got up while people were smelling the roses. It really is like walking into and out of a beautiful painting all day long, but the covey is not painted there. I know you guys with dogs have all seen it. You need to be aggressive when the dogs are on point. Any stories or comments? I can write this now. The statute of limitations has run out. Back in the day, we used to road hunt. It was a fairly common practice. I knew where about 50 coveys were. One time while doing this, a dog went on point, and it was common courtesy for a vehicle that was coming the opposite direction to stop. They would wait, and watch. We shot, and I missed about three times. Stage fright, I guess. The man yelled out, "You're gonna ruin that dog." as he was laughing. Memories

If some of you naysayers don't think those birds are aware of you walking up on them, and can and will get nervous and flush early, or simply walk off from infront of the dog on point, you hadn't been around enough wild coveys. Get on up there and get 'em shot!

Some people just can't do it. They seem to actually be backing the pointing dogs. I've screened at them to move in front of the dogs. Many of them can not read a point and guess where the birds are, especially on singles. I've sen dogs caught in mid stride with their nose pointing toward the bird. They'll be out front kicking at the same distance of the previous covey.
Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Wasn't it in OK.. where they had tranmittors on the birds.. and the people monitoringwere quoted.. about how the birds so easily evaded the dogs and hunters.. would run off so easy.. so right , about wild birds.. the rabbit and hound thing. one is running for their dinner.. the other for their life

On my guided hunts I try to only hunt two at a time and we are always walking. I explain to them that the object is to get the bird up, shot, retrieved and in the bag. I push them to go quickly to where the dog is pointing and to EXPECT a surprise when the bird gets up

On the rare occasions I hunt with more than one person, if everyone wants to put their dogs out, I put mine up. Surprise, even when you know they are there. About 99.9% of the time.
