What do y'all do for your dogs when they are sore and you are getting them back in to shape? Any medicines or treatments?

My dog started getting sore and worn down after five straight days of hunting recently in Oklahoma. I saw sniper john give his dog an Advil on a hunt before so that's what I did then sent him home to get some rest for and take it easy for a while.

I'm obviously not an expert at all I could just tell he was worn out

Enteric coated baby aspirin works well too. The kind that you take every day for cardiac issues.

I've had mine soak in bath of real warm water with Epson salt.
After they are in the tub, I just put them on down for 15 to 20 minutes.
Pointers get pretty beat up in some areas, with briars, wild rose and cactus.
They normally go from walking like a old man, to perking back up.

Rimadyl is what I use. I tried giving them aspirin but it goes through them like a dose of salt and I find myself cleaning out soiled crates.

Do not give a dog advil. Ibuprofen could be harmful to your dog. You would have seen me give my dog aspirin or half a tramedol.

Now for me with 30 years of firefighting, almost half as many bullriding, motorcycle crash, flesh eating disease, and lots of stupid hold my beer watch this stuff, I do always have some advil and aleve on hand for me on those trips or I get all stove up. But never give those to a dog.

I accidentally dropped an Advil on the floor here in my office one time and the bosslady's little king charles ate it & got real sick. She was fine after a few hours but she did give her peroxide to induce vomiting within 15 minutes of her eating it. But she was already sick from eating the Ibuprofen before she gave her peroxide.

Ibuprophen (advil, motrin) and even aspirin are probably a bad idea. Long-term administration of these drugs are not well tolerated by dogs. A couple prescription drugs, Rimadyl and Metacam, are safer and more effective.

And rest, followed by very light exercise, is never wrong.

I wouldn't give it anything to get more work. They get over it in two days.

Ace's lower leg joint would swell up & be sore for a few days after every hunt last season, I started giving him Glucosamine about mid season last year and he has been much better this season. Every vet I have ever known has told me it's fine to give them a buffered aspirin for pain but like Bill, I wont hardly give them one just to get to hunt em more. They stay back at the truck and take it easy the rest of the trip. (One of the benefits of having multiple dogs).

I use Hunt Dog Hunt by Zoom Dog Supplements for all my dogs. Great product that works well.
