I am having a custom 6.5 but for long range, tactical matches.
I want to go as short as I can get away with.
I plan to shoot a lot of Hornady factory ammo.

I will put a JEC brake on it that will also serve as a mount for my Templar short 5" can.

Lots of guys run 26 but it seems you dont really need to run that long of a barrel.
I have read a 22 with.a can and a fast barrel puts you right at the same velocity.

Havent decided on barrel maker but it will probably be a medium palma profile.

Thoughts?
Thanks!

I won't tell you what you should do, just tell you what my 6.5 Creedmoor is doing.

25" Bartlein 1:8.5" twist, Rem Varmint contour, finished at 25", JEC brake

Virgin Hornady brass
CCI no. 200
H-4350 42.3 gr
Hornady A-max .024" jump to the lands

MV 2810 fps

The barrel already had 200-ish rounds on it when I got it (what a blessing!!) I am quite sure that once the brass has all been fired once and I FL size it with a .003" bump I will gain 20 +/- fps. As you well know shortening the barrel makes the load lose velocity, and as you well know all that means is you have to dial a little farther on the elevation turret or hold a tad higher in the reticle. So what, right? I wish you would run the numbers in 20 fps loss increments from my velocity and find the point where you start having to hold a tenth more wind at 400. Of course this will magnify out as far as you want to push it. I say 20 fps since that is the rule of thumb for every inch you cut off the barrel. You will have some theoretical and only calculated data, but jbm is pretty darned reliable.

I have always competed with a 24" barrel and brake. I love my suppressor, and keep it on the 6.5 Creedmoor all the time, but that is for hunting purposes. I hold more value in having a loud more maneuverable rifle than I do a hearing safe rifle that is 10" longer (Tigershark). Afterall at a match most guys are not shooting suppressed and everyone is wearing hearing protection anyway. Just my point of view.

Thanks
I want to start doing stuff like the Bushnell Brawl.
I have a place to shoot to 1k and have experienced the diference between a 308 and a 6.5

I dont want to over 24 I think..
A buddy was using a 26 with a 9" can and it was just too long..

My 20" 308 with a 9" can is a lot to negotiate around with.

24 with my 5" can which ads 4" to the overall length shoukd have about the same velocity as a 26" barrel.

I know not all barrels are the same speed...

My builder is going to be Greg Young with Southern Precision Rifles..
I am letting him choose the barrel.

You could have him cut it down to 20" and probably be just fine.

I shot with Greg for two days at a match in Shreveport in 2012. Nice guy.

I'd go 22" just because I don't think you lose much and gain in manuverability. But nothing wrong with the approach of trying it there and having them cut it down if you don't like it. Just a chop and crown.

Charles,

You have good info on speeds and such from above. Most of your sniper matches, like the Rifles Only Bushnell Brawl have become a match that you need to be very mobile. I've shot this match many times, and only missed this event once or twice since about 2008. There is a lot of running and gunning. There are many guys that run a suppressor. Most have a shorter barrel for the added length of the can. I would not go longer than 22". A 20" would be even better. Most of the shots will be inside of 600 yards. Yes, you will have some stages at 700 plus, but these kind of matches will be won or lost based on your shooting from 600 and in. I shoot a 6.5x47 at 23" with a brake. I won't use a can, since it adds too much length and weight to the rifle for mobility. The longest I would go is 22" with a can. You will see most shooters run fast 6mm and 6.5mm rounds. The 6.5 CM will run just fine out there. Hope this helps.

Chad

The only thing I'll say is my 6.5 CM has a 26 in barrel and if I had to do it over again it'd be a 24 in. barrel.

Just curious, I know a suppressor adds length but does it add any FPS?

Same way a tight bored brake does... Still holds gas pressure behind bullet

they might get 50 FPS back..

thanks Chad..
I want to be able to shoot 1K consistently..
and the maneuverability factor is high on my list as well

Do you know Josh Ruby..
he's up that way..
he told me:
I run 23" with the Templar Nemesis 30 can. Makes it 27" OAL.

That is sort of what I was thinking. if I can't make up my mind between 22 and 24 just split it and don't worry about it.

I will see what Greg has to say

Yes, it will add fps. If you shoot a 300 blk out subsonic round, you will gain about 40 fps with a suppressor from unsuppressed. How much you gain on a supersonic round depends on the bullet weight, barrel length, and relative speed of the round. I will gain about 30-50 fps on a normal supersonic round, depending on a few factors. When the bullet leaves the barrel and enters the suppressor, there is still some added back pressure on the back of the bullet increasing it's speed some.
