Anybody know the details on hunting this river? Went out and scouted a hole I found a couple other times while scouting, and saw some groups of woodies, a group of geese, pair of mallards, & some cranes flew over at the sky blast level.

Has anybody ever hunted this river before or is it not public anywhere?

If you can find a place to legally park, a place you can legally get to the water, then the only thing you have to worry about is:

1) is it a navigable river
2) your shot must not go onto other people's property
3) if you shoot a bird and it lands on someone else's property, it's wanton waste if you don't retrieve it and trespassing if you do.

Technically it's legal if you shoot straight up and down the river and it doesn't bend for 202 yards (the distance shot travels) and all your ducks fall below the high water line.

The river cuts my property in half. I was informed by a game warden it is illegal to drive any vehicle into the river bed. In other words the state owns the river bed. I can't imagine where it would be wide enough to hunt legally using the guidelines Dave Speer posted. The only place I could see it being near legal would be right down on the coast where the river opens up a little bit. If that is the case then why not just go on down to the coast and not worry about pellets leaving the river.

Sounds a bit complicated.

Yeah Wayne brings up a good point, there are also the other things:

local/municipal laws, are you in a city limits? And the river has to be defined as navigable to be considered public. Then there is the whole Spanish land grant thing in different parts of the state...

A call to the GW that patrols the area you are considering hunting might help out.

I figured it out mostly the past couple days thanks to you guys, haha. I don't think it's huntable, sadly, but it's just the way it is. There is some nice wood ducks on that river, and some mallards to be shot at.

Hog & bobcat hunting on that river looked superior as well, and I saw 5+ blinds along the riverbeds. We'll see how it goes, but I am gonna give the GWs a call that patrol the area.

I've been parking right on the Colorado County Line off of I-10 and not seemed to have a problem with that..but the San Bernard doesn't look navigable at all, that a person can get to without owning property backing up straight to the river.
