Will a .308 bolt face work for a .284 case or should I use a magnum bolt face?

again that's the wrong question to ask...... its not an either or question' the measurement is .473 standard bolt face nothing magnum about a measurement...
a question worth asking is should you build a .284 on a short action or long....

You assume I haven't already decided which action I prefer or if I care at all.

Will a .308 bolt face work for a .284 case or should I use a magnum bolt face? Yes. It would be called a 7mm-08 in a short action. It would be called a 284 Win or 280 Rem in a long action. It would be called a 7 Rem Mag on a long action, magnum bolt face (.540") All will push the same exact bullet. You pick the bullet, you decide how fast you want it to go, you decide how much recoil you're willing to tolerate. That what you were looking for?

284 Winchester uses the same bolt face as a host of cartridges 22-250, 308 Winchester, 30-06..... Most rifles in the past for the 284 Winchester are on short actions like used for the 308. These days most custom guns for it are long action so the bullet may be seated out further to take up less powder room. SAAMI specs for US cartridges can be found at http://www.saami.org/specifications_and_information/index.cfm

What are you planning on shooting. I went against the grain and built a 284 on a short action. 162 Amax netted me 2900 out of a 26" barrel. So it can be done effectively.

Walter I am mechanically opposed to long actions...... Shoot I'm not! I like having a bigger case I can put a compressed load in. I got the .2 extra second to cycle it.

I am leaning more and more toward the short action, especially since the WSM cartridges came out.
For a 284 though, I would go with the long action for the reason FiremanJG mentions above.
Kind regards, charlesb

2900fps in a short action platform is outstanding. once you cross the 2800fps w/ the 162 is all gravy, sure a 7mag is faster but you've already gained the majority of the bullets ballistic advantage. And since I make it a point not to own a long action....... the extra 50-75fps you could get with the .284 long action its a waste of time and space.... you have to jump to 3100fps to get any significant advantage over what WBurke is doing with his short action... Cheers and congrats on taking down the long action .284

It's all just a question of what you're willing to give up for what. Cheers and congrats? Sure...on making up your own mind to satisfy yourself, all dogma aside.

I don't have that rifle anymore but I got most of my data from a guy of snipershide that built one right before me and he was getting the same thing. But I agree the 284 works just as good in a short action as a long.
