I know it's cold, but lose those gloves before you have an accident. Gloves and woodworking machinery are an accident looking to happen.

also you could save on wood, no need to shave that much off, start with smaller pcs.

You need to learn how to use a skew, watch these 2 videos made by Brendan Stemp.

You also need to sharpen your chisels you won't get all of those tear outs that you are getting. Saves you sandpaper and sanding time.

If you don't want to replace your bearings in the headstock you better quit hammering the piece of wood on to the spur drive, remove it and do that off the lathe and then replace the spur drive and stick the wood into the marks you made.
