3-9 would do just fine.

Lots of variables.
Hunting or target?
What kind of hunting?
How far do you shoot?
How much is your budget?
Is there something wrong with the 3-9 you have now?

If you're hunting deer under a feeder at 100 yds your 3-9 is just fine. Most of my guns wear a 4.5-14x40 Leupold because I think that is the perfect scope for the hunting I do.

I'd save your money. It sounds like you are set up pretty well. @ 100 yds. you should be "driving tacks".

Vortex Crossfire or Diamondback would be nice. Lots of options for less than $300.

If you are only shooting 100 yards, and the scope you have works properly and holds a solid zero, I wouldn't spend a penny on a new scope. I'd buy lots of ammo and go shoot.

Agreed, lots of people get real hung up on fancy glass (I tend to be one of them as I sit here unboxing my new Zeiss 6.5-20) but I killed a LOT of deer with my old Tasco 3-9 before I realized the error of my ways. If the scope you have now holds zero spend the money on ammo and have fun. If you really want an upgrade for a bargain pick up a used Leupold Vari-x 2. You can get them all day for $200 and they are great scopes. Sill carry the Leupold warranty and everything.

I own 20+ various hunting rifles previously owned by my father and grandfather that have old plain ole Redfields or Leupolds. I have not altered these scopes or guns out of respect and all but one scope holds zero. Not sure of the quality of new scopes, but the older ones in my opinion are relaible.

Yup. The guy that shoots more will be more prepared when the fatal shot needs to be delivered.

Another option, if $300 is burning a hole in the pocket is to get the equipment to hand load.

Yep, mount it and start shooting. We have 2 .243s and they both wear 3x9s (Dad's was going to get a 4-12 this year as his eyesight is going, but I bought a 7mm-08 out of the blue and it's going on that).

Another option on the $300 is trigger work/replacement, action bedding, and barrel free-floating.

This! Aside from lots of practice, reloading has done more to shrink group sizes for me than anything else.

I got the Leupold FX3 6x42 fixed scope on my .243 and love it. You talk about a clear view during last light and no worries about adjusting zoom when in close range! IMO the best range for the .243 is 200 yards and under and the 6 times magnification works great out to 200 yards and works awesome out to 100 yards where most of my shots occur.

Of course I also got a .243 with a Zeiss Terra 3x9x40 and a .243 with a Flir thermal scope too....like them all.

I would go down to a sporting goods store and pick up some scopes and look through them and see which one you like, scopes have differences that can make the difference between you loving it or wishing you would have gotten a different scope.

I like a standard ole duplex reticle and my son likes the BDC type reticles and a larger objective.

I have a Leupold 3x9x42 with a duplex reticle it was around $200.00 and is a really good scope.

My son uses a Nikon pro staff 3x9x50 scope with the BDC reticle and really likes it.

What others have already said about practice is one of the most important things you can do, You need to know your gun..

I have gotten out of the habit of shooting as much as I used to because of the problem with getting ammo, but I still shoot 10 or 12 boxes of ammo through my hunting rifle every year and shot countless rounds of 22 and 223 rounds every year.

The more you shot the more natural it is to make a good shot while in a hunting situation.
