NV or Thermal? IMO, thermal is the way to go.

Under 1K, your only realistic new option is digital. Read some of the threads on the Photon XT, the X-Sight and the Pulsar 550. Avoid advertising copy like the plague and research the reputation of ATN before you buy one of their products so you can make an informed decision.

NV or Thermal? IMO, thermal is the way to go. Are there any thermal scopes available for under $1000? I bought the Photon XT...even though I haven't hunted with it yet, I am very happy with the picture I get looking through it at night.

At best you will only get Gen1 in nv for under 1k. Save and wait, watch sales. Optics Planet is a great place for this. I watched and waited and saved 1200 on an ATN gen 3 last year.

Under $1000 I would also suggest the Photon XT, great scope and great value! If you spend a little more you could get into the N550A that will give you better performance, but not necessary if you wanted to stay within your budget.
If you go with any of the digital units be sure and get an external IR as it will greatly increase your effective distance!

Are there any thermal scopes available for under $1000? No. About the cheapest is a Pulsar APEX and it is going to be about $3000, though maybe there will be news from the Shot Show about somebody else coming out with less expensive thermal.

Photon XT is the best option in digital at about 500 plus the cost of a t20 ir light. You might find a PVS4 gen2 scope for less than 1k, and might have to buy a mount for it, but you could still get in the total for less than 1k. PVS4's are good hardy scopes, but on the heavy side and the reticle is not so nice, but they do work well. I have both, and prefer the Photon as it is lighter and closer to the bore line. My PVS4 is a Gen3 and is nice, but it works best with a shooting stick.
