Do any of you have opinions on the Dodge 6.7?

Take off the emissions junk and its a great motor.

I got one a few months back and have put 15k on it so far. Haven't gotten into towing too much with it but have pulled close to 10k lbs more than once and it does good. Think it has a little more power than my duramax but is pretty close. This one is a short bed so it rides rougher. I also like the exhaust brake in this one better than in my chevy. Only complaint about the truck is dodge makes them not the easiest to service. The oil filter is a pain to get too and the fuel filter is also. They are on there tight from the factory so it takes some work to get them off. After that I don't put them on nearly as tight and it makes it a lot easier.

How is the fuel mileage on the 5.9 and the 5.7?

Not sure about those but on my 14 the computer says I am getting average 16.5

You mean 5.9 and 6.7?

The 5.9 is good for mid teens to 20 or so depending on gearing and transmission and driving habits. The 6.7 if deleted is good for about the same. Bigger tires and heavier foot will land you at the bottom of that spectrum. The 6.7 pre DEF so 2012 I think and before is good for 13-16 mpg empty. I have no experience with the 6.7 with DEF, but hear mid teens around 16-17 mpg or so.

Got one new in 2008. Ram 2500 long bed, 4 door, 4WD. At 30k put a delete kit on it. Empty it gets 19 mpg. Have pulled 20,000 pounds plus with it. Hit 100,000 miles last week. Never once has it been in the shop. It has been an absolutely outstanding truck. A real work horse, and it is surprisingly quick. I think I'll keep it for another hundred thousand.

Yes I meant 6.7 not 5.7. I currently drive a 2002 ford with the 7.3. I average 16-17mpg city and was getting 20mpg on hwy. My truck has not been chipped. I absolutely love the truck but cannot stand how temperamental it is when starting in the cold. I really like the dodges which is why I am asking this question.

My cousin had a '96 7.3. Was a great truck, it ran awesome, got good fuel mileage and he had a mild chip/tune on it. It would keep up with our '04 and '05 duramaxes pretty well. However like you said it was a cold natured SOB even with all the glow plugs replaced and functioning if it was below 40 or so degrees and you didn't have it plugged in... it wasn't going to start!

I also love the cummins. If you find a 5.9 in good shape I don't think you can go wrong and if you get a 6.7 and chop the DPF/EGR delete they are pretty great too. Getting rid of emissions stuff can be spendy though.

I love my 6.7. I have a 2011 crew cab, long bed, 4x4, 3.42 gears, with a standard. When it was stock, I got right at 15 mpg empty. I put a 3" suspension lift and 35s on it and dropped to 13 mpg empty. At around 50k miles I pulled all of the emissions out, put a programmer, exhaust, south bend clutch, and head studs in it and I'm back to 15-16 depending on how I drive. Sure I was shooting for better mgp, but it wasn't my main goal..

Have a 2014 2500 Mega 4x4 w/ 3k miles. Lifetime average is 18mpg. Over 20 on the Hwy @ 70+.

Take the computer read out with a large grain of salt, its seldom right and I bet yours is wrong.

Got a 14' cummins reg cab 4x4...high way will see 20mpg (computer reads 23). So far so good at 25,000 miles!

The computer does lie a little but I have done the math at the pump and I can get over 20 mpg on the highway (65-70) in my 2014 4x4 6.7 no mods. I will admit though I'm still running the crappy factory street tires it came with. I'm sure my mileage will suffer when I get her some new shoes.

Best motor ever built is the 5.9 12 valve. Easy to work on no computers to screw with. Easy to modify for more horse power and gets fair mileage. 214,000 on my 97 12valve and I'd drive her across country in a second! Love not having a payment!

Exactly, it is a good solid old motor, but in todays market it competes with the ecoboost, not the 3/4 and 1 ton diesels.

I disagree somewhat, with factory cummins parts you can get 525hp at the flywheel. Not stock but not aftermarket either.

Sure and I can cram a couple pounds of boost down a 350 small block with a turbo or supercharger. I don't exactly see your point we are not talking about what you can mod out of one. You can plug a grogrammer into an ecoboost and do a lot of things.

Had one with 350k when I sold it.. Only work on it was rebuilt injectors at 300k. Guy that bought probably put another 200k on it

Turbo charging a 350 (I assume you mean a GM small block) compared to buying stock over the counter parts from your local cummins distributor. The modification of getting 525 flywheel HP out of a cummins 5.9 B series can be done without "performance" parts and with no internal changes to the injector pump..


Refresh my memory on this since you seam to know a lot about mechanics but, I don't recall ford selling a programmer for a ecoboost and I don't recall GM ever selling a turbo charged 350 in a non performance application.

I tend to like the older dodges, in fact I have a 2000 dodge 2500 QCLB 5.9 ltr 4x4 with 264,000 miles on it. It has it's quirks but I drive it more than I drive my 2012 ford f350

I put 120k on my 08 6.7. 100k of that was deleted. It had steering and front axle problems and the trans was weak. That was the last of over a dozen Dodge Cummins that I bought. Really glad I switched to Ford in 2012, love this truck. I still have a 2002 Cummins 4x4 with 280k that is flat [censored] worn out but it still runs good when it's not having dead pedal issues, or having to take the front driveshaft out for its 75th rebuild. The truck needs to be replaced but the Cummins is good. Can't say the same for the 04 and 06 Dodges I had, the 04 was pretty good except death wobble, the 06 was an absolute pile of crap, front end, rear end, a/c, fan clutch lights sensors going out and everything rattled apart.

That's funny and the goofiest thing I have ever heard, I use to haul 20k pounds plus of pipe, purlin, cows and hay with a one ton dulley. Today's market is about dealing with EPA, ultra low sulphur diesel and marketing. Pulling is factious number any way. It's all about how you set the trailer up and how much of the weight goes over the rear axle and how the tranny is made and geared to handle it.

I'm starting to wonder if you ever really used a truck.

Compete with the Eco boost...lol only if you don't have to go over 10miles loaded. Loved to see an Eco with 200k plus miles of pulling 15k pounds plus on it.
