Found this interesting.

10,000 rounds per ammo maker.

That was a very interesting article, thanks for sharing.

Give me a diablo sandwich, a Dr. Pepper, and make it quick, I'm in a gosh-darn hurry.

You bet!

And no, it does not make it look too good for the cheap stuff. Cooked one barrel in 6000 rounds. eek2

I read that ALL of the steel-cased ammo barrels were cooked sometime between 4000-6000 rounds. They were keyholing during the 6000 round accuracy test.

Just re-assures my decision to NEVER shoot steel-cased ammo through my guns... Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting indeed.

Wish they would have shot steel out of the Federal gun after they finished the 10K federal rounds, just to see how much further it would keep going.

To clear up a bit of confusion, it's not the case, but rather the bullet jacket that's commonly used by russian manufacturers. Hornady steel match, for example, won't do this.

correct, it is the bi metal bullet causing the issue.
I have one AR I built up with a melonite treated barrel specifically because I wanted one 5.56 I could run whatever ammo I wanted through it.
It is my "oh [censored]" gun.

Having said that, I try to avoid shooting the real lowend crap out of it.
I won't run that stuff out of a match stainless barrel.

I've seen this before. Pretty in-depth and informative!

If you get 6k rounds with steel, and 10k with brass and you save even .04c per round buying steel case, by the time you burn up the barrel, you will have saved so much money you will come out ahead even buying a new barrel every 6k rounds. Plus 99% of guys will never shoot 6k rounds out of their AR-15 so they save all that money upfront, and it NEVER becomes an issue, just a savings.

That graph at the bottom shows the cost savings is still way better with steel cased even with two barrel replacements. They didn't exactly pick the cheapest barrel either at $250.

true.. however it usually isn't very good ammo in terms of accuracy.
So, blasting away at close (say under 200 yards) targets with a red dot it probably doesn't matter.

Shooting out to say 500 yards with a gun capable of at least MOA performance and expecting to make good hits I wouldn't use it. Of course, 55g ammo sucks usually if there is any wind..
