I am tired of taking off the compression ring and popping the lid on and off my 55 gallon feeders so I ordered some of the galvanized ones that have a 3" lip on them that just set on top of the barrel.

Do you guys attach the lid to the barrel with any hinges or brackets or do they stay on pretty well without anything?

I got a couple of those lids, some baling wire put on opposite sides of the lid, ran it down to the leg bracket, secured. No more bigfoot, coon, or wind/rain problems. Hogs on the other hand...

All our feeders have those lids they work really well but we just put a decent size rock on top of them and ain't never had an issue. Before that we never had one fly off for about 2 yrs then we had some real high winds that blew one off so we just put the rocks on all of them.

All Seasons galvinized feeder lids for 55 gallon drums really work great and come with mounting hardware(or used to). The slip over the top and have a 4" lip then have the springs to keep them on. Fit a bit loose to allow air to circulate.

I have two and have never used anything on top of them without issue. They weigh 5-10 lbs. so not going anywhere.

I have had the heavy deep lip ones blow off before putting rocks on top.

I have had feeder lids sucked off the top of a feeder with hood latches holding them on in strong winds. I would say you have been very lucky so far.

Going on 5 yrs with the galvanized ones with 3" lip and have had a couple blown off in foul weather. Put a small, self-tapping screw on one side so that it barely catches barrel lip. Tilts off without tools and stays on now under all conditions.

This ^^

We had some issues this past season with wasps trying to stay out of the cold but some wasp spray around the edge will take care of that.

have used the rocks and screw as described above, both work but the screw is easier IMO

I haven't bought a feeder lid in forever, luckily have access to insulators at work that cut/bend/rivot whatever you want for a pig or a bottle of Don Julio. Galvanized lids with a handle on top and a 3-4" overhang, work great and the corn can breath a little. Yes I get yellow jackets in them sometimes but I always watch for them and have spray handy to deal with them when filling feeders. A brick or big rock or two on top and have never had one blow off.

My lids are simply the top four or five inches of the drum (sealed lid) cut off like the All Seasons posted above. Cut/bend in the edges of the drum a little and the new lid fits tight but still has good ventilation.

Use the gal. Lids from Bass Pro, comes with spring attachment for two points. Have had for 15 yr. no bad issues.

I do not think you are going to need to worry about the gal. lids. When you get them put one on then see just how easy it comes off, I think you will find while it is snug, it not loose either.

Bought the plastic ones from acadmey, they have a over hang and finger screws on the sides to keep them on. Hadn't had any issues with them and the corn can breath, hadn't had any rotten corn since installing them

As someone who makes and sells winch feeders I listen to my customs several & years ago I had a customer from the Lagrange area tell me that he had a problem with squirrels chewing through the plastic lids. Well it also happened to me last year, and as a result I no longer sell feeders with a plastic lids. The lids I put on mine were heavy duty but the critters are more heavy duty. I only furnish the original barrel lid or the galvanized lid now. The galvanized cost more but like everything, the goal is to prevent an "oh Sh....T". This is the same reason I will not sell a winch feeder without a brake winch as opposed to a boat winch.

We use big rocks or a couple of springs and self tapping screws.

I use these. $10.54ea

http://www.grainger.com/product/EAGLE-Dr.../Grainger/5PW08

They are heavy duty thick plastic (a lot better that the light weight academy $19.99 feeder lids), and a helluva lot better than fooling with the locking ring and bolt every time. Best part is they don't hold water that ends up in the corn or on you!

http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/wildgame...id&Ntk=All#

There are 2 types one for closed drums and one for open drums so make sure you buy the right one.

I've had mine in the field for over 8 years and it hasn't ever blown off, leaked water, cracked or dry rotted, been chewed up by squirrels or coons, or let wasps in the feeder (although they have made some nests under the rim on the outside of the feeder). and if you don't like yellow then paint it. smile

Don't go and buy them all cause I need to make 2 new feeders and will be needing one of each or 2 of 1 of them. Just depends on the type of drums I can find at work.

Same here, got 2 springs and bolts and a galvanized hot water heater base. now my "lid" is spring loaded and easy to ove to fill. Base for WH are cheap too.
