Hey yall. I've heard many things but just wondering because I'm in the market that if a 5.56 or .223 will do the same to a hog as a 300 blackout or at least drop a hog. Some people say it will, some say it won't. Just wondering what the people think. Also a list of good brands would help. Thank you in advance.

I've killed a bunch of hogs with a 5.56/.223 BUT they've all been at less than 100 yds. and they were all either eyeballed or earholed. I've also earholed does at up to 150 yds. off of a steady rest. The Blackout is a fine round for its' intended purpose, which is short-range and subsonic for use with a can, and it works well.
IMO opinion, if you're wanting to shoot over 100 yds, go with the 5.56/.223, if you want short-range, more energy, go Blackout. Keep in mind that the ammo cost is way different as well.

Have you thought about a AR in 6.8 SPC? Great hog option.
300 Blackout is great if you're running a suppressor and reloading for it.

Got a 300 blackout bolt gun. I'm comfortable to about 200 with it for a kill shot. Plenty of knock down still.

AR in 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC are better for hogs at longer ranges IMO. Boiler room shots get the job done cleaner at longer ranges out to 300 yards or more I know for the Grendel and hear good reports for the 6.8 out that far as well.

If only doing earhole shots about anything you can hit them there with works, my favorite bullet in the 223 for deer or hogs is the Nosler Partition which has served very well. Lots of good reports for the 75gr amax from a 223 also. There are other 224 inch bullets that will work well on hogs and not just head shots like the 64gr Win Power point, 65gr Sierra, 64 grain Nosler bonded, Sirocco's ..... But the better .224 bullets get up to about the same price as the Grendel and SPC.

The 6.8 SPC would be a great "mid-range" addition to anyone's cabinet. There is a wide range of pointy things out there to reload it with and Hornady offers some decent factory stuff for it off the shelf. I have one and enjoy the heck out of it.

Yeah, 6.5G and 6.8SPC are the most capable SAAMI rounds in the AR15 platform. Good rule of thumb is that <=18" should go to 6.8, >=20" should go 6.5G -- between that is pretty much a wash.

Head shots are great and a 223 is fine for that. Heck, so is a 17hmr. When they are on the run its nice to have something a little larger to send through the boiler room. 300 blk gets my vote over the 223. Works great out to 200yds.

This!!!
With 125gr bullets, the 7.62x39 has half the drop and 75% more energy out to 200yds.

You can ear hole a pig with a .22LR and it'll drop. Between those 2 calibers, I'd go 300blk.

any blk-out with a 130gr bullet or bigger trumps the .223 w/ in 300yrds for killing proposes. no doubt the .223 will be a flatter shooing bullet but the 30cal bullets bring the pain......

If you but a bullet in the boiler room, the animal will die.

The 300 BO has a decent subsonic, and doesn't loose much from short barrels.

The 5.56 is cheaper. The parts are more available.

I still wouldn't hunt with a subsonic. . . . .Maybe if I had a can.

Good luck.

Please list the parts that are more available.

To the OP-
Out of those 2, I choose 300blk. Great hog gun.
