Going to run up for a mi week trip in the next two weeks. How are the mid week crowds? Also how are the roads there I will not have dogs but I am very athletic my hunting buddy said I look like a mnt goat. Pushing birds has never been an issue. Any areas I should look into or concentrate one hope to find at least a little help as this will only be a day and a half hunt on a five hour one way drive thanks for any input.

Also what kind of sticky plants are there out there? I'll never forget the first trip out to black gap I forgot my hunting boots and all I had was a pair of tennis shoes. I Musta had three or four of everyone of the hundred different type of cactus that are out there in my feet at one point or another that trip at least there were plenty of birds that year lol.

Gene Howe has basically two types of terrain; the east side is hilly, sandy, sage brush with plum thickets and plenty of prickly pear, the west side borders the river and has grass and lots of trees and swamp. I've not been there this year, but in the past I only saw blue quail on the west side and the other quail numbers were pretty low. Make sure you have you AHP and check the open dates cause they close the place down for deer hunts. There are Lots of stickers around, so if you have dogs, bring boots. They also have a DU wetland with lots of fat mallards if you're into waterfowl. Good luck.

I finally found some info on them redoing the wetland in 2001. May not be able to hunt dukes this trip though. Look like we won't make it till the last week of the month week after duck season ends. I'll pos a report when we get back.

Looks like we are going to try our luck at Gene Howe next week for a short hunt. I have never hunted there before, and was looking for any help I could get.

Thanks!

Finfeathernfurr, we found a few birds. From talking to another group of hunters out there, and the biologist on the phone, I expected to see a few more birds than we did. Most of the birds we found were very close to the main road that bisects the property in the tree lines. We tried several other areas, but that is where we saw birds.

Hey 3 alarm that is the exact kind of starting point I was looking for! I know how biologist talks go... Last two trips out west to black gap birds were as far from where he told us they could be last year it was birds are looking good. I worked 13 hours drove ten by my gps I flat out jogged-ran 11.2 miles right out of the truck never pushed a single bird. I will admit two years ago I would have hit a limit both days. But without a dog for retrieve I lost birds I was within 24 inches of. It is amazing how well they blend in get a big flush hit first and move to second knock down both but taking the eye off lose both after 30 min of searching. We drove strait back 10 hours never setting up our camp and went back for another shift to make up for lost time. You are mid cities I am the store manager of the chicken express by the hulen mall if your ever close stop by and say hello Robert. I will let you know how we do I am worried as have had to let several people go last two weeks that is the only thing in my way. But even if it is a suicide day run I tend to check it out.
