I have heard of some people making hog feeders out of 55 gallon drums and poking few small holes in them and chaining them to tree or something. If anyone has used this method how long would couple hundred pounds of corn last and how often do the hogs hit them?

Any other ideas to keep hogs around with out using regular spin feeders?

Can some post photos of what they have or have seen people make?

Do a search on pig pipes. This is what I would do before I use a 55 gal barrel.

I use pig pipes. They are very easy and cheap to build.
I have also used the post hole trick. They stay longer but when they get done, it looks like a stick of dynamite went off and the land owner wasn't too happy

Dig a deep hole and fill it with corn and something sweet like jello or syrup.. cover a bit and it will hold them for weeks.. even when the corn runs out the sweet smell will keep them digging for a good while.

We just tried our first "blowout" (post hole filled with corn, topped with strawberry jello powder) this past week. Wow, after only two nights they both looked like a bomb crater! My BIL put the blowout in place on Monday night. By the time we hunted Friday night the corn was pretty well cleaned up and we didn't contact any hogs that night. Thinking now that we may go to the pipe or barrel trick.

Just get a feeder, they are worth it...

These will feed hogs just the same as deer. I made this one for around $80 bucks. This one is bigger than a 55 gallon drum. It will hold 400 lbs of corn easily.





Built this one out of a standard metal 55 gallon drum. The drum had contained orange juice before. Again this one cost about 80 or so to build and is waaaaaaaay more sturdy than the ones you can buy at this price.

I don't suggest putting 100 lbs of corn in them. Too heavy for the hog to kick around and get corn out of the holes.

Have a funny story about a barrel with a hole in it. Got a huge barrel, put a hole in it like all the internet recipes said, and had visions of pigs bumping it all night to get a few kernels at a time. Every time I went to hunt, the barrel would be empty. I couldn't figure out what the heck was happening.

I finally put a camera on it and realized I had about 20 coons coming to the barrel. One would sit at the barrel and rake corn out till his arm got tired and then his buddy would take over. They would be sitting on 50 pounds of corn and still be raking it out of the barrel as fast as they could.

I tried making the holes smaller, covering them with mesh wire, etc. and finally gave up. Nothing beats a feeder with tack strips on the legs!
