Is there a minimum to make it good?

im trying to decide on a bullet for a 6mm. I want some more speed and flatness but I really don't want to shoot the magic 105's. This will be primary for predators and might be used at night where twisting knobs with the use of a spot light isn't always Practical. I also don't need the hyper speeds.

I guess I just need to get a ballistic program

Not sure what the mumbled word is but what ever ballistics you are comfortable with. I want best I can subjectively push in the case I'm using for the very best in wind deflection.

Speed plays a factor in that equation also. There are times where a lighter bullet can be pushed faster and have less wind drift than a bigger bullet going slower.

A perfect example is I have a 6.5x47 that won't push the 136 Lapua's fast enough accurately to compete with the 105 hybrid running 3050. Now, it isn't much but it's true.

So you really need to spend time playing with dbm or another ballistics program to see what works best for you.

But as a general rule the only 2 things that beat the wind are speed and BC.

This is always a balancing act. Up your BC, you increased weight and lost velocity. Reduce your BC you reduced bullet weight but gained velocity.

P_102 came out and shot my class on Friday with a 243 shooting 87 gr Bergers leaving at 3200 fps. They shot stellar at 100 yards and ran out to 800 yards with no problem. Seems it would be the perfect bullet for what you are wanting the rifle to do.

BIL, you are, what I call, "geeking out" over the small stuff trying to figure out what bc is best. If you want a lighter bullet going fast, bc shouldn't be apart of the equation. There's 3 options- light bullet (55-70 grains) going 3500ish fps, medium weight (80-90 grains) going fast 3200ish fps, and heavy (100-115) still going fast 3050-3150 fps. The lighter the bullet, the lower the BC, and the heavier the bullet the higher the BC. Everything is a compromise in shooting. You have to figure out what you are willing to compromise. If you want to shoot the longer ranges, you can balance your bc with speed and pick the middle weights, like an 87 grain hunting VLD. I have numerous customers running this bullet at 3200 fps with great success long range plinking and on game. If you want faster, then go lighter with the lower bc. If it's for predators, I'd go lighter and run a 55 or 70 grain Nosler BT, or if you want less expansion, get a 60+ grain Berger target bullet that the jacket holds together well for less fragmentation.

For me that's pretty easy as I have shot most 6mm bullets in that medium weight range in calibers from 6X45mm/6mmDTi up to .243/6mm AI and IMO either 75 or 87gr VMax are the better choices unless of course as Chad mentioned you want a less frangible bullet then the 80-88gr Berger will be the ticket.

Are you shooting a 6mm Rem.? If so run an 80 grain Sierra BT Varminter. Decent B.C. for what you want and plenty flat. Running them from my 6mm Remmy. and they shoot flat enough for me to 400 or so.

If you're shooting varmints at night with a light, you're shooting at ranges where BC is irrelevant.
