What are the must do and see's? Food? Looking for BBQ joints and I hear Franklins is the place but a heck of a wait. Ideas appreciated. The only thing I have planned is going to the the LEO Wall, other then that really not much. Thanks,
Roy

Well, you'll want to see the State Capitol, it is higher than the Federal Capitol in Washington. The Governor's Mansion is next door. Sam Houston lived there. The "Grand Hotel" in town is the Driskel (sic?) which is pretty pricey but if $$ are an issue you can still walk around the lobby and grab a drink in the bar. You probably ought to see the campus of the U of Texas and Longhorn Stadium. There a guy in town that makes custom cowboy boots but I forget the name. Lots to see and do. BBQ joints. Several. The Green Mesquite has two locations. I think there is Sweet Baby Ray's, several others.

La barbecue is a good one the guy used to work at franklins. Louie mueller's isn't too far from Austin definitely worth the drive. Shady grove is good for burgers and lunch. And moonshines is a great dinner place.

I second the Driskill Hotel. Even if you don't stay there, they put out a mean breakfast in their cafe and you can still walk around a bit and check out their artwork and a little bit of history. Threadgill's is an Austin standard with borderline landmark status. "Down Home Cooking." I always found them kinda' so-so, but the side dishes are really good. I like Eddie V's for dinner, on 5th street. They have really good seafood and their steaks beat the pants off another pricey steak house in town which shall remain nameless, and they have live music. Usually a 3-piece set-up, not so loud you can't converse over dinner. Last time I ate there they had a pianist, upright bass, and a female singer singing Rat Pack classics and it was pretty good. Excellent service, excellent food, but a very relaxed atmosphere. Edited to add: Last time, we got there late after a show and had to sit about 4 tables away from the stage and could still talk comfortably, without YELLING at each other. https://www.eddiev.com/en/our-menu/current-menu/tx/5th-street-austin/8501

Texas Chili Parlor on Lacaca has great chili and Casino El Camino on 6th has a great Bloody Mary. It's a meal. Everything that can go in a Bloody Mary is in it.

La barbecue is a good one the guy used to work at franklins. Louie mueller's isn't too far from Austin definitely worth the drive. Shady grove is good for burgers and lunch. And moonshines is a great dinner place. LA BBQ is short for Leigh Ann's BBQ. Leigh Ann, Wayne, and John Mueller are Louie's grandchildren and Bobby's kids. The oldest, Wayne, runs the original Louie Mueller's in Taylor. Leigh Ann and John moved to Austin and started their own BBQ joint, but John the Dark Knight disappeared, leaving his sister to go it alone. Later, John resurfaced in East Austin and started his own joint called John Mueller Meat Co. I may have the actual details a little twisted, but I believe I'm basically right. Whenever we visited our two daughters in Austin, we invariably hit one of the joints. And they always have patrons lined up to buy their Q, just like Franklins. Only difference is Obama has never broken in line at a Mueller place, like he has done at Franklins.

I think your right in with the details dawaba! Sometime after John mueller and Leigh Ann split is when she hires John Lewis to be her pit master. It's pretty funny to read some of his interviews. Franklin always preaches salt and pepper only on brisket and Lewis says he has worked there and can guarantee he has never smoked a piece of meat with just salt and pepper. If I recall he does some mixture of pickle juice and mustard along with various spices.

If you're driving down there from North, I highly recommend Margaritas in Round Rock, TX, some of the best Mexican food I've tasted. Very well known right off of I-35 in Round Rock.

A lot of my favorite restaurants have been mentioned already (Franklin, LA Barbecue, John Mueller Meat Co., Casino El Camino, Texas Chili Parlor), but here are a few others I like Freedman's (awesome bbq and comparable to those mentioned above, but the advantage is they are open for dinner and have a full bar while the others are only open for lunch) Home Slice (pretty good NY style pizza joint) Austin Land and Cattle (my favorite Austin steakhouse and not to be confused with Texas Land and Cattle) Gus's Fried Chicken (fries up some good yardbird)

Hey fellas. If I don't want to venture out of Austin, is Stiles bbq ok? Or should I take the drive to Salt Lick?

Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew is darn fine BBQ ... on north Lamar just south of Airport Road. http://www.stilesswitchbbq.com/static/ ... it beats Salt Lick in my opinion on brisket.

I had forgotten about the Texas Chili Parlor. I used to eat there all the time when I was working at the Capitol.
A great place to eat if you get out north is Inka Chicken on Wells Branch Parkway, right off of 35. Nothing touristy or cool about it, just the best yard bird you'll ever put in your pie hole.

Number 1 on the must visit - Cabela's. Make sure to go to the back of the store and then turn left. They have a gallery with some incredible deer mounts. There are more around the hunting and bow areas, but the gallery has the jaw droppers. There is an interesting aquarium with native Texas fish in the front by the customer service desk. In the everything else after Cabela's stop: Guero's for Tex-Mex. For a more upscale Tex-Mex, Manuel's near the Arboretum is very nice and still pretty moderately priced. The Arbor Theater across the parking lot has "art" films if you want to try that - wives can really like that a lot. Benny's out Hwy 71 about 10 miles east of the airport for BBQ, or make a trip to Lockhart for Black's or Smitty's. IMO skip Salt Lick. In the times I've been there, it is very crowded, loud, has long waits and is overrated. Driving to Black's or Smitty's in Lockhart will be faster, better BBQ, and a better experience. Benny's is just a little shed on the side of the road with some picnic tables, which is nice a sunny day. Black's has some very impressive mule deer on the wall, which is worth a stop if you are so inclined. Eddie V's as mentioned. The Arboretum location is nicer and with a bit older crowd. Check online for reservations and music at both locations. Roaring Fork downtown or north is excellent. Make sure to order the macs and cheese with green chilis. I never eat macs and cheese and this stuff is tasty. Austin Land & Cattle has great steaks and chicken fried steaks. With the legislature in session, it can be crowded with politicians and lobbyists. If you or your wife like to swim, Barton Springs is a real treat with spring fed water, albeit a bit on the chilly side. Just jump in and start moving. After a minute or two the water is great. Sienna on 2222 @ 360 is very nice Italian in a beautiful building. Kerby Lane on Kerby Lane is good for breakfast around the clock. The pancakes are a specialty. Definitely very "Austin" feel to it, or at least the older hippy "Austin" feel to it. The Bullock Museum usually is interesting if you like Texas history. For a day trip, the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg is interesting for WW2 history. Warning, women like all of the "cute" shops in Fredericksburg, so lock up the credit card or be prepared to have smelly candles and water buckets with bluebonnets painted on in your house. The Arboretum and/or Domain are both nice if your wife wants to go shopping. The South Congress scene and shops are very trendy with all of the hipster crowd which seems to be a hit with the ladies also. Allen's Boots and/or the bar at Guero's are there for an escape from the "SoCo" scene. The Stephen F. Austin is another nice historic hotel downtown.
