I posted a photo a few weeks back about a monster 8 point I was getting pictures of on our Mexico hunting lease and in a rather awesome sequence of events, that deer has since been killed and I have killed the largest deer of my life.

Above is a picture of the 8 I was planning on hunting this year. Fortunately I never got the chance to hunt this buck this year because my best hunting buddy, my dad, stuck down to the lease while I was working and killed him his second morning out. Before my old man had left, he told me he had no intentions of shooting that deer since I had expressed interest in hunting him. I jokingly laughed and said that he would be a fool not to shoot that deer, never thinking twice that he actually would. This would be my dads first trip to mexico to hunt by himself, so needless to say he was more than nervous. After about 50 text and a few phone calls, I was finally able to direct him over the bridge and to our hunting lease. On his second morning he texted me at around 8:20AM and said that my 8 point had just shown up. This was the first time anybody had actually laid eyes on this monster deer all year so I excitedly responded with "Is he a shooter"….. 20 minutes later my phone dings at me and I receive a picture of the buck laying dead with a text that reads " yah, I think so!!!". My old man had smoked the 145" 6.5 year old monster 8. It was a little bitter sweet to take in but I definitely couldn't have been happier for my dad taking the biggest white tail of his life and doing everything by himself. I thought he was getting old, but he's still a pretty damn good hunter.


Now that the 8 I had my eye on all fall was dead, I moved my sights on to another buck that I had just started getting pictures of on a new stand, all the way across the ranch. This new buck wasn't a giant, but for sure was a nice solid 9 point and a mature deer



I hunted this buck for 3 consecutive days over the christmas holidays with no success. I was corning enderos an hour before sun up and sitting all day, minus about and hour or two for lunch. In my hours of sitting that stand and not seeing the buck I was after I began to think that he might be bedding extremely close to my stand and me corning the cenderos every morning was not only alerting him of my presence but also scaring him off every day. Needless to say, I went home empty handed that trip but felt that I had maybe learned a good lesson on hunting this buck. I kept my eye on the weather and was ready to go back when this last front blew though on the 30th of december. Unfortunately I couldn't get away from work until Jan 1st, but as soon as I could, the truck was loaded and myself and the buck thief himself, my old man, were headed to mexico.

We arrived that afternoon in time to check cameras all over the ranch, however I elected to not check the stand were I was hunting the new 9 point. I didn't want to disturb the area and planned on sneaking in quietly that evening in the thoughts that the buck would hopefully never know I was there. It was a perfect evening for hunting big rutted up Mexican white tails, with a steady north wind blowing and a constant fog/drizzle blowing though. All afternoon I sat and only had one sighting of a yearling doe and a red tail hawk. With about 5 minutes left of shooting light I caught movement in the oak thicket to my right about 140 yards out. It turned out to just be another doe but my hopes were lifted in the thought that maybe my big 9 would be following close behind. She ventured out into the clearing directly in front of me and after a few minutes with out a rutty buck appearing I began to consider packing up my stuff and heading in for the evening. About that time movement once again caught my eye from the right in the same place the doe appeared from. By now the light was less than low, and the fog was beginning to settle in. I got my binos on the deer and instantly saw heavy, dark antlers and a forked G2. I knew it wasn't the big 9 I was hunting but was definitely a deer you don't want to pass up. In and instant my binos were down and the 308 out the window. The buck began to make a scrape at 136 yards and my cross hairs found the last rib to make a quartering away shot. I squeezed a shot off and heard the thud of a 175 grain Sierra boat tail make impact. The buck circled towards me and fell within twenty yards.

Ground shrinkage was not an issue on this buck, I was walked up on him in the mud and the fog, I was in complete disbelief at the mass and extra points growing off this deers head. He was no doubt the biggest buck of my life and a total surprise. We have no trail cams of this buck and I have no idea where he came from, just seemed to appear out of fog.
