Yesterday I was blessed to harvest a mature 18" whitetail buck with my .54 Flintlock. 90 gr of Goex FFg pushing a 230 gr roundball. Distance was 63 yards.

The answer is FLINTLOCK! Now, what was the question?

Congrats on a nice buck!

I've killed many deer with a round ball out my T/C Hawken. Very accurate but have to admit I don't use it much anymore

That's a nice buck and a good looking rifle too

EXCELLENT Rocklock. Venison taken with a round ball and flintlock tastes better than any other. My best flintlock buck isn't nearly that nice. Congratulations.

Flinters and roundballs go together, that's for sure. Good job, sir!

Thanks guys. 2nd buck with it and 4th w flinter. I built the .54 for elk and maybe a buffalo hunt. Didn't get a shot on elk last year. Used a Renegade stock, green Mtn barrel and L&R lock. Browned metal and Tung Oill finish. I think it made a good huntin gun. May get a 20ga smooth barrel fitted. Would be octagon to round.

For newbies, if you have an in-line with a fast twist, you'll do best with a conical bullet however if you have an old side lock with a 1 in 48 twist then a patched round ball is really great. The patch means the ball doesn't contact the bore so no lead fouling. Just clean up with hot, soapy water. If you use a conical in a side lock (no easily removable breech plug) you might be inclined to remove lead fouling with a bronze brush but that's a NO-NO in a traditional muzzle loader as the metal bristles will get slanted towards the muzzle and when you try to pull the brush back- it JAMS. So on a traditional muzzle loader a patched round ball is what you want.
At 70 yards or so it is very effective. The round ball generally leaves the muzzle at a higher velocity than a conical. The downside is the velocity on the round ball drops off pretty quick. If you are using open sights and your eyes are "so-so" then a 70 yard shot is a good range so then the round ball ought to be fine.

Agree with that Dave - I can shoot and be $$ at about 70-80 yards but 100 is a much different story....At 100, I'll be all over target with no discernible pattern. Also, I've tried 3 different sights and nothing helps me near dusk or low light...I can't see the front pin well enough on any of them. I've thought about putting a little fiber optic on front but then it wouldn't be traditional anymore.

Rock - Great buck...no easy task shooting it with a flint - I gave up on my flintlock when I missed the only buck I ever had in my sights - it was only 30-40 yards.

This barrel is made for round balls w heavy hunting charges. 1/70 twist with .012" deep cut rifling.
Shoot thru both shoulder blades.
