Not trying to start another ammo war, but was at a buddy's house tonight and he had one of those Judge guns that's basically a short rifle.
He's got it loaded with 410 slugs and was saying it'd be a good close quarters gun and would easily take down a deer.
Have never shot one and was just wondering if any of you have.
I've used buckshot and shotgun slugs on deer, but those were 12 gauge.

at very close range it is a smack down with a rifled barrel it might even be good out to 100 and it will easily take down a deer

I rolled a buck with my 44 mag pistol at 17 yards this season. I would think a 410 slug would be ample at close range

500 fpe at the muzzle on a 100 grain sabot moving at 1500 FPS is more than enough. I would stick with shots with in 75 yds and shot placement is critical because of the lack of bullet fragmentation. Have it re chambered to 3" and you can get 750 fpe at the muzzle.
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

Yeah, was basically thinking about it from bow range.
I like the gun because it's very compact and would be easy to maneuver in a ground blind.
Then again, so is my 30-30. Just not quite as much.

I have a bolt action 410 and had rifle sights put on it several years ago. I have shot several deer with it and a couple hogs. About 75 yards is the max for acuracy but it is the king of knock down power out to there

It has about the same amount of energy as a .40 s&w.
In a pinch it would work but I wouldn't carry one to the stand.
At bow range I put more faith in the bow
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have a judge, great pistol. .410 should easily take a deer at teasoneable ranges.

Haven't looked at 410 slugs lately, but the ones I have shot in the past I would consider marginal at best for deer and only at short range like bow range. Being that it is short range I would just use 45LC, bigger bullet with momentum gets the job done at close range for sure. The thin walls of a Judge I would not use heavy loads in the 45LC either.

My son took his first doe at 10 yards with a single shot .410 and a slug.

A buddy of mine shot a doe in the neck at around 25 yards when we were kids. It almost took her head completely off.

Then again, so is my 30-30. Just not quite as much. Why anyone would opt for a .410 slug over a .30-30 is beyond me. Unless you just want to handicap yourself for challenge purposes-which is cool.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.
