Ok I have been looking at scopes a lot lately and have always wanted a NF but wasn't sure I wanted to spend that much. The one I am looking at is a NXS 3.5-15x50. My main question are they that good or would something else be just as good for less money? Uses are hunting and hopefully doing some long range paper punching.

That is all up to the person buying. But my opinion is yes it is worth the money.

U get what u pay for!
Totally unrelated but years ago I bought a brand new Goldwing motorcycle. I walked over to buy a helmet and was looking at the cheap ones. I took it to the parts counter to pay for it and there on a poster behind the counter and it read.....got a 10 cent head? Wear a 10 cent helmet. I put the one I had selected back and bought the best one they had per the parts guy.

I can't say yes enough times. Glass is 2nd to only the ultra high end scopes and light transmission is great too. We all know how durable they are. Best scope for the money IMO.

yes, its worth it.....Clarity is sufficient enough to shoot past 1000yds. About to buy another one myself, looking at the ATACR I have a NXS only difference is the tube size and price.

They are good scopes. I have used a couple of them on friends rifles. Waiting on a ATACR right now and can't wait to get it dialed in. Only downside is the Weight.

If you want to do some reading of what the Pro's use in the Precision Rifle Series and how they compare, the best bandgfor the buck is the Bushnell Elite Tactical, and used by Team GAP, I have a couple of Nightforces, but love the Bushnell for size, etc. I have the 3.5-21x50 with the Horus H59 reticle. The scope which is a First (Front) Focal Plane (FFP) can be had with the G2 reticle for about $1100, quite the steal. Here is some good reading, they also go over a lot of other stuff. They also tests the scopes at max magnification to see how close they are. One user on this forum said the whole industry is far off (an industry wide problem) on their rated magnifications, which I beg to differ. This is the scopes used in the PRS and data associated: http://precisionrifleblog.com/2014/10/24/best-tactical-scopes-what-the-pros-use/If you scroll down this page you can see the test for max magnification, more because long range shooters want magnification depending on their needs, but will also be worse case because of the mechanical factors involved. If I took the average of all scopes, it is 1.83% error, meaning that if you went to say 5x, a 1.83% error would put you at approximately 5x +/- .1x. Pretty impressive. http://precisionrifleblog.com/2014/07/03...results-part-2/

DavidK the majority of the prs guys demand ffp so the link provided is a bit biased. If one moves over to F-class or br there are a majority of people running NF as well as a few other second focal plane scopes. That being said Bushnell has been hitting homeruns left and right these days by listening to the customers. I'm really liking the LRHS in MOA.

If money was no option..I would buy nightforce all day long. Looked through one at the range and its amazing how clear and crisp the glass is...but im on a budget and vortex will do for me. I also picked up a 12x swfa for 230.00 and its clearer than my 1000.00 vortex. Just dont think I wanna fixed power on my 300 win mag. If my vortex ever fails will be buying a 5x20x50 swfa

SWFA, VORTEX, LEUPOLD, BUSHNELL will all get the job done if you don't plan on using the reticle and are only going use the turrets then a second focal plane will do. If you have some extra cash I would recommend US Optic, its splitting hairs with S&B. I personally don't care for a FFP because the reticle is to dense at high mag, some will argue but its just what I see. Things that should be a must are zero stop, good tracking, and a reticle that your comfortable with. It take more than a clear scope to shoot long range.

SWFA, VORTEX, LEUPOLD, BUSHNELL will all get the job done I personally am not familiar with the Nightforce, as well as all brands. Nightforce may be top tier. However, with quality control seeming to get less and less with so many products these days I put a particular emphasis on warranties and service. When you see some of these twenty-year-old Leupolds that are all scratched up and heavily used, and have been sent back to the factory for free service, no matter if you are the first buyer or the tenth buyer, and with no receipt needed, that carries a lot of weight with me. I have been looking at other brands to save money and always go back to Leupold, used ones at that. They have been here forever, and have that no BS, no questions asked warranty.

Leupold doesn't offer anywhere near the features or reliability of NF in the same price range.

Leupold has some very capable scopes, take a look at the tactical line of Leupold. It's not a NF but they aren't to shabby. I have a leupold that is comparable to the NF.

I was looking at the SWFA but it's not much cheaper than a NF does anyone know who makes the SWFA 5-20x50 HD? That's impossible. Compare FFP, Mil / Mil, 10 Mils per rev, and 5-20 X. With NF you can have the F-1 around $2k or the BEAST, well over $3k. The non-illuminated SS is $1200 retail. The SS is the scope I use the most. I shoot with it, I spotted a student with it yesterday to 800 yards, and I will be hunting with it this afternoon, Monday and Tuesday. It has been worked the hardest of all my scopes, never have I sent it in for repair, never has it lost zero, always has it tracked properly, abd yesterday I could easily see bullet impacts on steel out to nearly half a mile.

When you go from Second focal plane to First focal plane the price nearly doubles.

True, but I'm a long range shooter here in NM, give me an FFP scope any day. And you know how it goes, as ccoker asked, how are you going to use it. Comes down to what you really need it for. The Nightforce is a great scope. I prefer using the Bushnell for hunting aided by a Leica laser rangefiner and a Kestrel with Atrag ballistic calculator. Here is my Bushnell mounted on one of my rifles:

Thanks guys for the responses so far.
I am having a 6.5 creed build by Derrick. I want it to be my go to rifle. Hunting mainly with the opportunity to shoot beyond 500. I am also wanting to get into some Long range shooting hopefully up to 1000 yards. I would like to do some matches as we'll.
