Need your opinions on whether this would be ok for the dog or not.
If I take him with me out of town to work this will be his schedule:
At work I have a converted horse trailer that is my "office" and I work my 12 hours in it alone. We also have a living trailer that is shared.
I would work 6pm to 6am and he would be in my office/trailer with me probably sleeping since it's his night. When I get off each morning we would go hunting until about noon so 5 hours or so of running. Then while I sleep, he would be in his insulated crate outside until I go to work again at 6pm. He can't be in the shared house.
What you think? Too much crate time during the day?

Reason I'm asking is it would basically be 5 hours of hunting and not much else but sleeping the rest of the day/night.

Seems fine to me. He will probably hunt hard and sleep hard.

If the bird numbers are good to great that would add more ammo to take him for me. Poor bird numbers or no birds I would be less motivated

Take him. Time together is good, we've been in a temp. job trailor since our shop burned and my 2 yr old doesn't care. As long as he can help...

If you have a truck you might want to invest in a fiberglass shell to keep the weather off the crate while pup is sleeping. I am surprised not many people in texas have shells on trucks if your an outdoorsman.

I would take him. The topper on the truck is a good idea or maybe hit wal mart & get a tent for his kennel to go in for real cold nights. Could even run extension cord and have an electric heater.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

At night (6pm to 6am) he's in my office trailer with me so he's good for the coldest hours. Tomorrow and the other day light hours when we're not hunting, for the 5 hours I'll have to sleep is when I kind of worry about him. That's when he'll be in his crate with the insulated cover and cedar chips. I'll probably keep him shut in the cab of my truck just because there's a bunch of fools running around out here and I don't want them messing with him.

He rode up with me today then had to go in his crate for a while so we could get work stuff setup. After that I took him out and he ran 7 miles. Now he's sleeping again. I think he'll be ok with plenty of exercise and he'll get that while hunting.

Hunted three hours today and found four coveys! I'm sick to my stomach though because I got no birds!
First covey: we had only walked about ten minutes from the truck. I'm just walking along day dreaming and look over about 40 yards and Blue is on point already. I took two steps towards him and about 20 yards beyond him about 15 quail flush. Dang, not much I could do there. Tried finding the same covey but they flew over a hill out of sight and we never found them again.
Second covey: we are working a fence line and Blue locks up. I ease up there and about 5 quail flush but I missed the only shot I got off.
Third covey: sort of like the first. Blue locks up and as I'm getting to him I see the whole covey run across the fence line and road about 30 yards ahead. I took one more step and bam they all flushed. No shot.
Fourth covey: this is the crazy one. We are working this hilly area and we are in the small "valley" of two small hills. As Blue goes up one side he immediately goes on a hard point looking out over the top. So as I get right beside Blue one quail flushes probably five feet in front of us. I shoot twice at it, missing both times somehow. So Im standing there pissed off and kicking myself when at least 20 birds erupted all around us flying in all directions. It was the craziest thing I've ever seen because they were flushing within feet of me literally. In the confusion of course I miss my last shot and watch them all fly off. Then to make matters worse i turn back to the dog and one last quail flushes, right where I step and I haven't reloaded yet. I thought it was crazy because I thought wild quail would never let you get that close so it completely surprised me when they flushed right beside me and the dog. Apparently I need to figure out how to pick just one to shoot at.
I'm new to all this as this is pretty much my first year quail hunting so four coveys to me was an awesome day. Just wish I had done my part.

You'll get better, and I'm sure Blue likes it better than staying home.

Been in that position many times, so risking my glass house remember my two personal rules of hunting upland birds on public land I told you about while we were hunting sage grouse in CO.
"Always be ready" and "Always believe there is a bird ahead of you".
Those two rules feed off each other and make all the difference in the world when I apply them.
If your still shooting that heavy fixed choke family gun, you might want to start thinking about something like a lighter shorter or smaller gauge shotgun that takes chokes and with a stock that fits you well. It would help with the snap shooting and followup shots on those wild birds.

Just saw this. I like shooting my late dad's Winchester and it's pretty light at 7 lbs. I've shot at a total of 4 wild coveys in my life. I just need more practice.

If anyone is still interested in updates, yesterday I didn't feel like driving the full 80 miles to the good spot so I check out some closer public areas. Didn't see anything as I kind of expected but it was good to know so I never go back lol. This morning we made the long drive. We pulled up to our first spot and just like the other day Blue went on point within sight of the truck. Now Blue always has what I consider a stylish point but this particular one was beautiful to me. Sun was just coming up and he had worked the south side of a small plum thicket when he locked up. He had his head held high. It just looked really good. The other thing that made me proud was that this was the furthest distance from a wild bird he had ever pointed at. I think he's learning to stay back some. So I circle around the thicket and end up flushing a single bird about 35 yards out in front of Blue (with the thicket in between them). Unfortunately I missed. I tried to convince myself that my hands were numb since it was 0 degrees out but really I'm just having a string of terrible shooting. So we hunt another hour in this particular area then drive down the road to another spot. I know this is crazy luck but seriously Blue goes on point AGAIN within sight of the truck, this time just about 20 yards down from where we pulled off the dirt road. They were right off the road and I would have walked right by them without Blue. So he goes on point and as I ease out in front of him two birds flush and fly to my left. As I start to swing left on them the rest of the covey (about ten birds) flies to the right. In the commotion I stupidly forget the two I began swinging on and turn right and shoot into them and of course hit nothing. FML why oh why?!!?? But I have good news. We finally connected! 30 minutes later we found one more small group of about 5. There was nothing magical about this one really. We were kind of working crossways to the wind just trying to get to another area and off to my left (downwind side) I see one quail take off over the hill. So I call Blue who was on my other side a ways upwind of the bird, and swing him around into the scent cone where he went on point. So I guess I really found these and could have just as easily walked over and flushed them without the dog but what fun is that? He held steady through the shot and retrieved to hand when I sent him. He looks kind of goofy but I like the pic. He's a sensitive butthead sometimes and his ears were back because I made him sit. Lol. He'll do everything you want as happy as can be if he thinks he's doing it on his accord but then he'll get sensitive when he thinks you're making him do something. On another note I've got to be losing weight on this trip. This dog runs full speed for hours.

Getting to hunt daily, you'll have it down in no time. I bet Blue is having a blast.
