Ditto for the 7mm...probably too much rifle for my typical 100-200 yard whitetail hunts.

my Buddy has an older weatherby vanguard in 7mag. That gun shoots like a dream. Recoil feels about the same as my Winchester 70 in .270.

As far as knockdown power... I saw a thread where a guy dropped a doe at like 900 yards or something close to that. Pretty impressive to me...

I cannot find a calculation to back this up

Assuming a 150gr 7RM load travelling at 3200fps (quick, not extraordinary) and a 9 lb rifle (quite light for a magnum caliber rifle), with no compensator on either, you would need a ~thirty freaking five pound .458 Lott (500gr, 2300fps) to make the free recoil energy equal out. Even a 180gr going 3000fps would about equal to a ~33 pound .458

Yes, 7RM kicks a LOT compared to a .308, but let's not say unreasonable things

So, 95% of these posts are about people hating their rifle because they bought the hype about needing a light-weight rifle or else never bothered to put a good thick recoil pad on.

I fired 40 rounds of .300 WM off the bench yesterday and could have shot another 40. The rifle and scope together weight 8.3 pounds and it has a 1 inch thick pad. (I will add I was wearing the coat I normally hunt in.)

Mine would be a Remington 700 .280 Mountain Rifle I bought years ago. That thing was brutal to shoot. One of my buddies wanted to give it a whirl one time when we were at the lease during the summer.....still has the scar just above his eye where the scope bit him. Can't say I didn't warn him.

Since the OP didn't mention rifle or handgun, it would be my .40 cal S&W. Handles and shoots great but just seems like an overkill unless there comes a definite need to shoot through heavier wood or metal.

Favorite has to be the "pocket punch" .380, with a Bersa Thunder being my favorite shooter.

I had the same rifle and hated it for the very same reason, buy I've had other .280s that were perfectly well behaved. Love the cartridge, but hated the 700 MR!

I can sort of agree about the .410. My dad gave me one when I was about 10 and we went dove hunting. He said it wasn't sportsmanlike to shoot doves sitting in the trees, but I could not for the life of me hit one on the wing. I would shoot up a box of shells and maybe have 2 or 3 doves to show for it. When I got a little bigger my grandfather gave me his 16 gauge double barrel and I proceeded to blow them out of the sky. Fifty years later, it's still my favorite dove gun, and I gave it to my son because he loves shooting it as much as I do. My old .410 single shot is still living in the back of the safe, because I don't have anybody in my family I dislike enough to foist it on.

7mm Mag. Had one in a Sako that couldn't group less than 2 1/2 " group in any load over the counter or reloaded. Recoil was a beast. Sold it after I shot a smallish buck at 200 yards aiming at the shoulder and gut-shot him. Took it to the range and checked the sights and it shot a 4" group. Tried different scopes with the same result. Sold it.
Bought a Blaser in 300 Win Mag and haven't looked back.

Another caliber I don't care for is the 270. Just never could get wrapped around that one. Same thing with the WSM cartridges. An answer looking for a question.

And another 4% are by people who didn't like a rifle because it wasn't accurate.

All the 7mmMags I've owned were extremely accurate shooters.....except for a Sako Finnbear. I don't care how beautifully finished a rifle is, if it will only shoot 2.5" at 100 yards it doesn't belong in a hunter's battery. I have to disagree about the recoil though; the 8.5 lb Sako with the rubber recoil pad is more like a damsel's caress than a beast.
