Two best things for a rifle are good trigger and make sure the barrel is floated. If it is already bedded buy a bunch of ammo and go shoot it.

I have done nothing to mine except adjust the trigger and shoot it. Mine is sub-moa with the Federal ammo I shoot through it. I have had no issues with the rifle, except that I didn't win it.

Ed The 783 is actually a much better design than the 700. They should do a little cosmetic work on the 783, and scrap the 700.

They cut every corner to make it mass produced, down to it's modeled in sling swivels.they have cheaped up the M700, but still is a better rifle than the 783 is. If you want to look a a quality mass produced rifle look at a blaser R8, they are not worth what they ask but are quality...the Remington 783 is junky and looks it. Will it work, and kill game? Absolutely! Is it a quality firearm that I would want to pass to my children? NO! Ed

Ed:
You are right about Remington not putting much emphasis on the cosmetic end of things with the 783, as they intend for it to compete in the inexpensive rifle market. ( Marlin, Savage Axis, etc. )
With some emphasis on the cosmetic end though, the 783 design would easily surpass the old 700 as it will tend to be more accurate, more often with less after-purchase work required. From a design standpoint, the 783 is way ahead of the 700, in part because it can be manufactured with modern equipment that did not exist back when they worked out the 700 design.
One look at the 783 bolt handle will tell you that Remington went out of the way to make it look inexpensive, while sneaking up on utilizing Browning's signature bolt knob design in a way that Browning is unlikely to complain about. Most of the rifle's other advanced features are strangely reminiscent of a Savage. There is very little there that is derivative or built up from the old 700, and there's very good reason for that.
The 783 is actually a much better design than the 700. They should do a little cosmetic work on the 783, and scrap the 700. It would not surprise me at all if this precisely what they end up doing, a few years down the road.
Remington is all about marketing something designed specifically to be cheap to manufacture - at a premium price. This why they haven't offered anything with a receiver made from a forging since the model 30. Putting a little lipstick on the 783 and calling it the "7000" or whatever while scrapping the old 700 design would be entirely consistent with the marketing philosophy there.
Meanwhile, if you want a quality designed firearm instead of a cheaply designed firearm, we still have Remington's competitors: Winchester, Browning, Weatherby, T/C, etc..
The Savage is inexpensive to make like the Remington 700 is, but the design is much better. - Not to mention the quality control and customer service that Savage offers. The only place where Remington has pulled way ahead of the other manufacturers is in the number and scale of its recalls.
Kind regards, charlesb

Ed do you know why remy discounted the 788,they will out shoot the 700 and the sales dropped for the 700, not every one can afford a 800. gun,I have every thing from 788's to coopers,if I wanted a truck gun I would buy one in a minute. I will probably buy the 783's for starter guns for my grandsons', and give them the higher end guns when the time comes. the 783 will shoot shelf ammo very well,

It's a new world with these cheaply made rifles that can shoot. I bought a Savage Edge (now Axis) in .308 for a truck gun. Thing just shoots-very accurate.
I do not like the plastic rifles at all. But you can't use lack of accuracy anymore as an excuse to downgrade them.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Boyds has five different stock styles available for the 783.
All around 99 bucks or so, some quite attractive.

I never did say they would not shoot...just said they look cheap. I did not say anything about a 788. Matter of fact got 2 one in a 44 mag and one in a 6mm. If remington brought out a modern day 788, I would probably buy one. I buy a gun for different reason than some. Is it a tool for me? Yes. Do I like to feel quality, and mind paying for it? Yes. I want to pass something to my son or daughter of value that they will appreciate. I always get a kick out a guy that brings me one of his "grandpas or dads guns" to see if it has any value...most of the time it is a POS double or pump shotgun, that should have made scrap years ago. This gun is of that ilk..not Many Winchester 21s, Parkers, Wesley Richards, hell even Winchester M70s are made today. I had a very good friend that made a rifle of super quality. It did not sell well on a large production scale,so he only makes them as a semi custom basis and sell them for 4 times a much as he first offered, it was a simple fact as peoples tastes, and what they were willing to pay for a quality sporting arm had changed.we live in a world of stamped, injection molded, spray paint, baked on, clamped on easy, but still want and value old world craftsmanship value...but don't want to pay for it. I am sure the gun is accurate, I am sure it will kill game, but I will spend my $400 dollars differently.

Ed This is what makes the world go around. It does, however, bother me to see a new member come aboard with a legitimate question and see him or his rifle get bashed because of it's "inferior quality." IMO one should just simply answer the man's question or give some advice that will better his situation. I am buy no means monetarily wealthy. So I am that man that has Savage, Ruger, Bushmaster, Taurus, Rememington 788, Glock, Marlin firearms. The "low end" stuff. But you know what? It works. Some of them work really well. I am proud of what I have and will pass down my "scrap" to my daughter and she will be happy to have "Daddy's old Savage .270" becaue it was her Daddy's. Just like my most prized gun, my Grandfather's Stevens 67 Series E 20ga. That gun is a simple "field grade" pump shotgun that isn't worth $200 but could not be purchased from me. (BTW I never met him because he died before I was born.) I'm sorry to rant, but it just irks me to see people get degraded for what they "don't have." Oh, I do have a Winchester M70 Classic Super Grade. It sits in the safe with 5 rounds down the pipe. It is one of those "too pretty to use guns" that people such as me aquire along the way. I'll likely never hunt with it because I don't want to scratch it or damage the bluing.

I'll likely never hunt with it because I don't want to scratch it or damage the bluing. Sorry sir, you took this just the way you wanted to--defensive.I said nothing "high and mighty" just said a lot of guys buy cheap crap. This is a throw away society. so company's build to that price point, and so they bolster sales. At one time I saw a lot of used rifles that were in the price range ( rem 788s,Winchester M70s,Rem M700s, ruger M77s ect) that could be purchased for similar money as the 783, yea they not be new, but would be something that would not only be a quality firearm, but maybe even be worth a little more than when they bought it. Again I said nothing about sentimental value, I too have a ol hammer 12 bore that my great-grandfather owned, that should be scrap, but I could not be talked out of it. I said most guys wag in some POS looking for Wesley Richards value out of a tier 3 double shotgun, just because it was old and great grandpa owned it...sorry not the case. I agree be proud of what you own, everybody has got their thing, I choose to spend my money on property, hunting, guns, and my kids...others like my brother spend it on airplanes, ect... I am not wealthy, I have worked very hard to be where I am at...I had help, but nobody "gave me" anything. Sorry if I came off snobbish, most at know me would say I am a tight a%s German, I save and make conservative investments?when I was building my reputation and business, I watched guys with "day jobs" waste more money in a month that I got to hang on all year...now when I spend a little bit, I don't feel bad at all. Sorry for my rant, I offer my advice because I have been a gun enthusiast my whole life.I had an uncle that left me with 35 high quality rifles (WR,Hollands, and a few Brit shotguns of different makes) that fueled my fire, and have been collecting and trading since I was 14 years old. Sorry you took my comments a rude, they were not meant to be that way. I was also a little disturbed by one of you comments..it said you had a M70 super grade that you did not want to hunt with? Sorry, you should hunt with them all no matter the perceived value, they are meant to hunt, and if you read my post I ended it by saying I would spend "MY" $400 dollars differently. You spend yours the way you want. Happy new year, Ed
