Years ago me and my grand father came across this Browning light 12 at an estate sale; some idiot took a punch and tapped his SS# into both sides of the receiver. Needless to say the price was discounted accordingly so I decided to buy it and sure enough it shoots flawlessly with both the fixed modified and slug barrel. The original stock had been cut down and was so beaten up and cracked that I threw it away and put a cheap synthetic on it. After using it as a spare gun; I think its time to liven this gun up and I was thinking about replacing the cheap synthetic with a Hogue stock set and having a gunsmith mill/machine out the SS# and fit the barrel with screw in chokes and cerakote the entire thing flat black. Your opinions on this and what you think the budget would be for such a project? Also - how much do you think the slug barrel is worth?...its a smooth bore with rifle sights and would consider selling it to help fund the rest of the project.

Those punch marks are pretty deep. I don't think you will ever totally get rid of them without damage to the receiver. Do the best you can with them and then Cerakote.
I am allergic to stupidity. You can't fix Stupid, but you can occasionally head it off before it hurts someone.

Anybody know a good gunsmith that handles this type work????? As far as the "Grind, sand, cerakote".....I'm thinking a gunsmith with machining equipment could do a neat job of milling it out better than I ever could with a hand tools.

If it really bothers you then you should do what you think best, but in the end it will still be a non-collectible, altered gun. Personally, I would just let it be a truck gun or a backup to have along while hunting, just in case.
One thing you might be able to do is have that area stipled in a nicely shaped panel pattern and have an image or something added into it. Then again, that could be pretty expensive.

Gunna cost an arm and a leg to get that done id imagine. You'd be surprised what you can do with hand tools and such.

You could probably fill the marks with baking soda and thin cyanoacrylate, sand it flush, and then Cerakote. I have not tried this, but the technique is used for filling fine cracks when woodworking. I would try the process on another piece of metal before trying it on your shotgun.

I'd replace the stock, but as far as the SSN? Farming the cost out to a gunsmith, may exceed what you paid for that fine old shotgun.
The tightwad in me would run a piece of duct tape over those number's, but honestly, I'd look for a small piece of metal that would cover them up. Maybe something with ducks engraved on it?
Kinda like the flimsy one's you'll see on trophies.
Hope that makes sense.

I don't think you can mill those numbers away and reblue because they are deeper than the engravings, unless you want a recessed spot.
You could easily fill them though, and paint the weapon with something like cerakote or duracoat easily. Clean out the built in grime and dirt real well. Fill with your desired filler: (silver solder, durafil, two part epoxy), let it dry, then file it down flat, block sand flush with high grit paper so you don't accidentally remove whats left of the engraving, clean again, and paint.
Almost seams sacreligious to put a coat of flat black on a Browning Auto 5 though. I love the high gloss blue or worn look on those. Prettiest shotgun ever made, in my opinion. You could fill with silver solder, and talented smith can use a few tricks to darken the silver solder to match the reblue, but it probably wouldn't be 100%, but would probably only be noticeable on close inspection.

This guy has a couple of Auto 5 restoration videos on youtube and is supposed to be an A5 expert. I'd call, tell him what's up and ask what options are to cover/hide/fix the problem. http://www.artsgunshop.com/.

The numbers could be microtigged then filed down and gun refinished. Like mentioned though it's a losing proposition financially.

Have it milled off and do a cold blue. Do it once, do it right. Don't "bubba fix" it.
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

My stupid bubba fix assuming that I would for sure want to something about it AND knowing the gun is not really a collectible any more.
I would alter the SSN enough to where no one can easily tell what ALL the numbers are; for example turn the "1" into a square, the "6" into an "8," etc. then I would use JB weld like bondo and butter up all the engraved grooves by applying the jb weld and removing excess with a razor blade.
then again, if i were literally this situation I would just scratch out enough to not be the same numbers and leave it alone.

Could always bling it up with a silver overlay with any type of pattern you want. Probably get a good estimate from anyone that makes custom spurs or belt buckles.

If it were mine, I would slap it down on my welding table and fill that numbering in with the TIG welder. Then sand progressively finer. It will end up with heat transfer into the steel, discoloring it, but if you're going to cerakote it anyway, that will get covered.

Saw that done on a Win mod 42. It was micro tigged and reblued. Was engraved and quality wood put on it. Not factory but it was custom retro mod. If you want to restore it then check on cost and make it a restore you could be proud of regardless of cost. Arts may be able to help you or someone like Turnbull can do it, how ever much you want to spend to breath life back into it is up to you.
