What color were the eyes, yellow or red? Was the bill broad (rounded-looking) and light bluish grey a lighter line and black tip? Or was it all black and triangular profile? Was it a particularly large duck? These are all things I think somebody who is shooting at Redheads and Canvasbacks should be able to figure out since the limits on each are set pretty tight.

Take a pic of the top of the bill and we'll know who's right and who's wrong.

It's definately not a canvasback, honestly looks like 2 different ducks lol more redhead on top and a little more like a canny on the bottom. I think the neck is just stretched, I didn't want to say it but that might be a hybrid but I think it's a redhead.

it was shot in Aransas pass on Friday by my son his second duck hunt, personally I believe its a can x redhead hybrid. Game warden stopped by our blind and he said he would count it as a canvasback due to bill shape. When we got back to the marina he came over and asked if we had plucked it yet. I said no so he asked if they could take pictures of it.

Last pic he's stretched and pic don't show blue bill very well. First pic shows bill. It's a redhead

Edit:
Those new pics make me question it. Pics don't show blue well because his bill is mottled black/blue. I think you are correct, hybrid.

the pic of the top of the bill shows the ridges that cans have. I would say hybrid. Super awesome bird for sure, great color to boot.

JA13654, welcome to the forum. Regarding your son’s trophy, when I first saw your images I wondered if it might be a far ranging Pochard (Aythya ferina) that I’ve encountered in both Asia and Europe but after sharing your images with friends associated with the Texas Ornithological Society their initial general consensus is they agree with you. It’s likely a hybrid Can X Redhead.

I say can/redhead. Got one exactly like it from TB about 20 years back. Half foks that see it say its a redhead and half say its a canvasback. Yours is only the second one Ive seen but I have a feeling many are shot but never IDed.

A Common Pochard would have a more distinctly colored bill.
