I'm looking to get a 1911 within a week or two. My budget is $1K. I'm not extremely picky but I've been looking at sigs but it seems that finding a holster for the more square slides may be difficult.

I know that I dont want a GI style. I want a beavertail and an extended (ambi preferred) safety. I'd like to have night sights but could put a set on at a later time. I also like the looks of a rail but really doubt I will ever use one.

What would the green screen suggest?

The sig tacops, sig extreme, and the ruger sr1911 are my top three choices so far. I would like to own a colt but can't find one that I really like.

I'd say get the Sig just because they're different. I think they're beautiful.

In that price range there are some good choices, personally I would go with a springfield over anything else in that price range. I have a few different 1911's and my favorite, although out of your price range is the Dan Wesson specialist. My brother had one of the sig 1911's and I was not all that impressed with it. I have been looking at all the ones I have lately and been thinning down the heard becuase I don't shoot them all and the springfield is one that is not going anywhere.

What was lacking on the sig?

Springfield would be a good choice. But of the ones you listed, I would go with ruger. Very well built, and shoot great for less money than the sig. The sigs are nice, I owned one several years ago and it was a great gun. I have heard that sig quality has declined over the years, but have no personal experince with that. Mine was great, I traded it for a delta elite 10mm. I just purchased a new para elite carry, and have been very impressed with it. Might give them a look.

The fit and finish just wasn't there for me. Also it didn't shoot quite as nice as I expected. If you take my Springfield and wiggle the slide left and right there is very little movement. Which means the slide to frame fit is good. If you take the Dan Wesson, being a semi custom, there is no slop as it is hand fitted. The sig did not have near as nice frame to slide fit as I like.

I'd definitely look at Springfield.

Or you can go the way I went and spend way more doing it. Have a rock island that shoots great but almost every single internal part is Wilson combat now. Slide and frame still rock island but that's about it. If I could do it over again and I will eventually if probably start with a Springfield. The ruger and Remington both are nice too. I'd also consider the para.

Or if it doesn't have to be new you could easily find a kimber or colt under a grand.

like others say, under 1k i'd go springfield, you could try to find a used trp for close to a grand or get an operator
if you didnt want night sites i'd say range officer, but it's a target gun not carry

i like the ruger but as mentioned it doesn't fit as tightly as the springfield, you can turn it side to side and hear a slight rattle. It's nothing that impacts its reliability but just isn't as solid

These are very good pistols especially in the listed price range.

I have a Springfield Loaded and Para Expert, they've both been 100% reliable and very accurate.

I have owned most over the years - many Colts, Springfield Armory's, Kimbers, SIGs, Dan Wessons, S&W, and more. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them...a good 1911 is a good 1911 and a fine pistol. One of the best ever made. My current 1911 is a Ruger Commander SR1911 and I'd give it an edge over many of the others these days. It feels, looks and shoots good, is American made if that matters to you (as I get older it does more and more to me). It has shot everything I have ever fed it right out of the box. And to top it all off - it's amoung the cheapest of the 1911s (it can be had for under $600 if you look a bit). About the only thing cheaper are Phillipene made Armscorp 1911's (Rock Island, Citadel, etc.). I prefer the Ruger over them too. Earl

one thing to consider is theres a $100 rebate on colt government model right now which brings it to the 600mark. for that you can buy the pistol, a bunch of ammo and get a nice beaver tail, trigger and hammer on it.

I would look at the Paras too. I have a 16-40 that I shoot in USPSA and it runs great!

I've had a few Para Ordinance 1911's and the only one I didn't like was the Para USA GI Expert. Got rid of it and replaced it with a Para Expert (new model, no MIM and hand fitted. EXCELLENT buy at under 650 bucks).

I've got a Ruger Commander stainless right now. I've had 2 colts a spring field 3 inch gun and a remington as well. I don't think you can go wrong with any of those.

The Kimber Custom 2 is hard to beat for the money. Pick you up a Amb safety at Brownells and you are good to go. Used 700 to 800. I have a Colt Gold Cup, Kimber Gold Match, Kimber Tac Pro, Kimber Custom 2 SS and a Sig. The Custom 2 are plain with out all the frills, but all you need. Nights sights don't help after the first shot anyway. Just my 2 cents.

Para Black Ops...double stack if you're feeling like mixing it up. Springfield loaded would be my second choice. The Ruger is hard to beat for the price, but a little bland for me.
